MAJORS AND MINORS
BA Degree and Undergraduate Specializations
Our department is flexible and allows you to tailor your studies according to your interests. For undergraduate majors pursuing a BA degree in Asian and Asian American Studies, four specialization tracks are available:
- The Asian American Studies track concentrates on the social, cultural and historical aspects of Asian Americans.
- The Asian Specialization track focuses on the language, culture and historical experience of a particular Asian country or region.
- The Asian Comparative track entails a comparative study that encompasses two or more Asian countries.
- The South Asia track focuses on the study of this region’s diverse cultures.
The major, regardless of track, requires eleven (11) courses, at least six (6) of which must be at the 300- or 400-level.
All majors, regardless of track, must fulfill the three (3) common major core course requirements grouped in the following manner:
Choose one (1) of the following core Asian American studies courses:
- AAAS 220 Asian American Cultural Representations
- AAAS 267 Asian American History
- AAAS 371 Asian Americas
Choose one (1) of the following core Asian studies courses:

- AAAS 106 East Asian Civilizations
- AAAS 135 Cultures of China , Japan , and Korea
- AAAS 277 Modern South Asian History
- AAAS 369 Contemporary Asian Societies
All students must complete the core AAAS Major Seminar (AAAS 496)
In addition, students must complete courses required by the particular track they have chosen, as well as Asian and Asian American studies elective courses.
DAAAS majors may elect no more than one (1) independent study, and not more than one (1) internship and/or teaching practicum may be counted toward the major. Students may elect to take one course Pass/Fail. DAAAS views the grade of D as passing but is considered unsatisfactory and unacceptable in fulfilling the major requirements.
