Chinese Studies Minor

Minor Requirements

In order to fulfill the requirements for the Chinese Minor, a student must have completed Six Chinese courses at the 200-level or above. Three of these six courses must be language courses, the other three must be literature/culture courses. (For students who already have a background in the Chinese language and who wish to waive language courses, see Number 3, below).

Each student is required to take at least one pre-modern literature course and at least one modern literature/culture course. For the third required course, the student may choose from any of the other pre-modern or modern Chinese literature/culture courses, or from the Chinese History and Culture courses

  1. Required Language Courses: Chin 203: Intermediate Chinese I; Chin 204: Intermediate Chinese II; Chin 305: Advanced Chinese I.
  2. Required Literature and Culture Courses:
    AT LEAST ONE THE FOLLOWING PRE-MODERN LITERATURE AND CULTURE COURSES: Chin 241: Classical Chinese Literature in Translation; Chin 461: Li Bai and Du Fu; Chin 462: Confucius Analects.

    AT LEAST ONE OF THE FOLLOWING MODERN LITERATURE AND CULTURE COURSES: Chin 230: Contemporary Chinese Cinema; Chin 280: 20th- Century Chinese Literature in Translation.

    CHINESE HISTORY AND CULTURE COURSES: Chin 202: Singing Chinese; Chin 350: Business Chinese; Chin 351: Business Chinese Culture; Chin 395: Internship; Econ 371: The Economy of China; IBUS 455: Business in China; Hist 273: Chinese Civilization; Hist 274: Modern China; Hist 341: China and the West; Hist 374: China in the 20th Century; Hist 472: Chinese Women and the Family.

  3. After consultation and proficiency test assessment by a Chinese Program faculty member, students who already have competence at any of the required levels of the Chinese language may waive one, two or three language courses, according to the results of their proficiency tests. They may then enroll in the higher-level language courses and/or other literature/culture courses to bring the total number of courses to 6.
