Japanese Studies Minor

Minor Requirements

The minor in Japanese Studies allows students to supplement their major through participation in a language and culture-based program.  In order to qualify for the minor, students will have to complete at least six courses (24 credits) distributed as follows:

1.  Three language courses: JPN 203 Intermediate Japanese I, JPN 204 Intermediate Japanese II, JPN 305 Advanced Japanese I.  (Note: JPN 101 Elementary Japanese I and JPN 102 Elementary Japanese II provide the basic linguistic knowledge and skills required to begin the minor).

2.  Three of the following Japan-focused courses, at least two of which must be at the 300 level or above:  JPN 306 Advanced Japanese II,  AAAS 281P Structure of Japanese, AAAS 381S Topics in Multilingualism, AAAS 210 Introduction to Japanese Culture, AAAS 282D Premodern Japanese Literature and Culture, AAAS 350 Modern Japanese Literature in Translation, AAAS 250 Japanese Cinema, AAAS 351 Asia Pacific War Experience in Japanese Literature and Film, AAAS 372 20th Century Japan, AAAS 271 Japan to 1600, AAAS 371 Tokugawa Japan, 1600-1868; and other approved courses as they become available.[1] Students must complete at least three of the courses listed above (12 credits) at Binghamton University.  A grade of C or better is necessary for a course to count towards the minor. Courses taken Pass/Fail will not count toward the minor. Students who already have competence at any of the required levels of the Japanese language may, after assessment by Japanese Program faculty, waive part or all of the language requirement based on the results of their proficiency testing.  They may then enroll in higher-level language courses and/or other Japan-focused courses to bring the total up to six.  Waived Japanese language courses will not count toward the minor.

[1] There will be changes to these numbers as some courses become (re)built through the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies and others are converted from topics to permanent courses.
