Academic Program and Faculty Development Fund

A generous donor has afforded Binghamton University the opportunity to establish a fund to advance its academic mission and to support its faculty who are so critical to our excellence in scholarship, teaching, and outreach.  Provost Mary Ann Swain is pleased to announce how these funds will be used to promote the University’s instructional, research, and outreach activities.

Monies from the fund will be used in the following ways:

Workshop

A workshop was held September 11, 2009, to explain the proposal process. A PowerPoint for the workshop is available here

Process

Either individuals or academic units may submit paragraphs of intent.  Paragraphs of intent were due October 1, 2009.

Full proposals will be invited based on a review of these paragraphs. The final proposal must outline the objectives of the project, the participants and/or beneficiaries of the project, the process to be followed to implement the project and ensure its excellence, and both the immediate and long-term import of the project for the University and its constituents. An itemized budget, tentative timeline, and plan for evaluation/feedback for the project are also required. Proposals submitted in 2009 may specify implementation in Spring 2010 or for one or both of the following two academic years (2010-2011, 2011-2012).

The Provost has appointed an Academic Development Fund Committee consisting of faculty and academic administrators to evaluate proposals for funding. The committee will provide brief comments on the import of the project, its feasibility, and its reach (the number of participants or beneficiaries involved and/or its intellectual significance). Since it is highly unlikely that any project will be without merit, the Committee will provide an overall judgment about whether the project has a high, medium, or low priority for funding. Based upon these recommendations the Provost will make the final decisions about which proposals to fund. Members of the Academic Development Fund Committee are:
