Judith Bernstein-Baker '66
Edward Weisband Distinguished Alumna Award for Public Service or Contribution to Public Affairs
Bernstein-Baker is executive director of Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society and Council Migration Service of Philadelphia. Since its founding in 1882, HIAS and Council – and its predecessor organizations – have helped more than 300,000 newcomers immigrate and integrate into the Philadelphia region. Prior to becoming executive director of HIAS and Council, Bernstein-Baker ran the Public Service Program at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, and was named Honorary Fellow of Penn Law School in 1998. She teaches immigration law at Philadelphia Community College and is an active member of the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers' Association, serving as pro bono liaison.
Anthony S. Kendall '83, MBA '85
Glenn G. Bartle Distinguished Alumnus Award
Kendall is chief executive officer at Mitchell & Titus LLP, a member firm of Ernst & Young Global Limited, and the largest minority-controlled CPA firm in the United States. After joining the firm as a manager in 1991, Kendall was admitted to the partnership in 1996, named New York managing partner in 2000 and appointed vice chair of client services in 2004. He has served on the Alumni Association Board of Directors since 1998. As board president from 2007 to 2011, his priority was to make the Alumni Association a more visible and relevant presence on and off campus. He has also served on the Binghamton University Foundation Board of Directors and School of Management Advisory Board. Kendall dedicated a room in Academic A in honor of his mother, Shirley Kendall-Stanley.
Stephanie Skiba '07
Lois B. DeFleur Distinguished Young Alumna Award
Hoping to inspire inner-city children, Skiba joined Teach for America after graduating from Binghamton University. She is a third-grade teacher at P.S. 86 in the Bronx, where she leads the Service-in-Schools team, a program that empowers students and faculty to give back to the community. She developed a Volunteerism Action Plan that planned a service-learning activity for each month of the school year. The most successful project was Pennies for Peace, through which P.S. 86 raised $2,049.85 to help build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Sean Hembrick '09
Alumni Admissions Volunteer Recognition Award
Hembrick is very vocal about his love for Binghamton University. For several years, he has assisted the University's Office of Undergraduate Admissions with college fairs in the metro New York region. He promotes Binghamton to high school students through these events, as well as in e-mail messages he sends to students admitted to the University. He was a member of GEAR UP, a partnership between the Graduate School of Education and local schools that provides mentoring support to students.
Marilyn Gaddis Rose
Distinguished Service Award
Gaddis Rose is Distinguished Service Professor in Comparative Literature at Binghamton University and has been a member of the Harpur College faculty since 1968. Working with colleague Carroll Coates, she developed the Translation Research and Instruction Program in 1973. She is a significant donor to the program. Gaddis Rose was named SUNY Distinguished Service Professor in 1991, in recognition of her application of scholarly interests to issues of public concern. In 2002, she received the Eugene D. Flood Award for Outstanding Service to Harpur College, an award given only in cases of the highest service to Harpur, not annually. Two years later, she received the University Excellence in International Education Award, honoring her work in teaching courses with an international focus and exposing students to new countries, languages and cultures.
