ALUMNI GATHERINGS

Join the Think Tank

The University's advocacy group - Think Binghamton - held an event at the Bearcats home basketball game on Jan. 17.  The Alumni Association and Think Binghamton encouraged alumni to take advantage of discounted admission and join the effort to make a case for Binghamton to federal and state legislators.  As the 2009-10 New York State budget takes shape, our voices must be heard.  Click the graphic to visit the Think Binghamton site and join the advocacy movement.

Dinner event in Jerusalem

On Jan. 18, about 20 Binghamton alumni living in Israel joined 35 current Binghamton students visiting Israel for the first time on Hillel at Binghamton’s Taglit: Birthright Israel trip for a lovely dinner at the Anna Ticho House in Jerusalem.  Alumni spanning the years 1964 - 2006 had the chance to meet one another and reminisce about their time at Binghamton, even though they are now living so far away.   It was exciting to see alumni connections spanning the globe.  The reception also provided a great way for the students to learn more about Israel and gain a more personalized understanding of the country.

“It was great to hear thoughts from Binghamton students experiencing Israel for the first time,” said Paula '96 and Josh '95 Weisman.  "We enjoyed sharing with them our perspective as alumni who live in Israel, and I’m sure it was interesting to hear from Israelis with whom they share some similarities."

“I had an amazing time catching up with old friends as well as meeting other alumni living in Israel," said Boaz Berkowitz '98.  "It was also great meeting current students and hearing how much has changed at Binghamton over the years.  I hope we have more events in the near future."

The reception was generously funded by the Lois B. DeFleur International Innovation Fund grant the Alumni Office received this year.  We look forward to using this grant to host more alumni events in Israel, in conjunction with future Hillel at Binghamton Taglit: Birthright Israel trips.  If you are an alumnus living in Israel, please let us know so we can make sure you receive invitations to future receptions.  For more information about Hillel’s Taglit: Birthright Israel trips, please contact Shana Kantor, Hillel’s Executive Director by e-mail or at  607-777-3424. Winter Madness 2009

About 800 alumni and friends attended Winter Madness on Jan. 31, an indoor tailgate party at the West Gym on campus.  The event led into the men's basketball game vs. Maine.  Binghamton's athletics program celebrated the fifth anniversary of the first basketball game held in the Events Center.  A record-high regular season crowd saw the Bearcats erase a 14-point second-half deficit en route to a 83-77 victory.  See more pictures at our photo sharing site.

Heartland Brewery Reception

Binghamton University alumni living in the New York metro area had the chance to attend two events on Feb. 6.  The evening of fun started with a Happy Hour reception at Heartland Brewery near Manhattan's Times Square.  About 90 alumni turned out for that event; most of the group attended the Broadway show Avenue Q later that night.  See more pictures at the Alumni Association's photo sharing site.

Stony Brook basketball event

More than 200 alumni attended the Binghamton men's  basketball game, on the road, against Stony Brook on Feb. 7.  The afternoon started with a reception at The Bench Bar & Grill.  Then, our group went to the Stony Brook campus to cheer on the Bearcats, who won 63-61 in an overtime thriller.

Boca Raton event at Lyons home

On Feb. 12, about 65 alumni and friends of the University attended a reception at the Boca Raton, Fla., home of Allan Lyons '62 and his wife, Diana.  President Lois B. DeFleur made remarks at the event, which also hosted high school students from Boca Raton who have been accepted to Binghamton University.  Lyons and the president both commented about admissions figures and the importance of supporting Binghamton University in the face of declining state funding.
