Judith Bernstein-Baker '67 will be honored by the board of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) and
Council Migration Service of Philadelphia (HIAS and Council) on Apr.
28 at the new National Museum of American Jewish History
in Philadelphia. Under her stewardship, HIAS and
Council, a partner
organization of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, has
enlarged its refugee resettlement program to assist diverse refugee
groups who have fled their county due to ethnic, religious or other
forms of persecution.
Art Spiegelman (right), world-famous comic artist, recently won the top prize
for his craft at France's Angouleme world comic strip festival. He is
best known as the creator of Maus, an animal fable of his Jewish
father's experience in the Holocaust. This historic work is the only
comic book to have won a Pulitzer Prize. He also published political
cartoons about the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.
Clark Zlotchew, PhD '74, author of 15 previous books,
has released two new books of fiction: The Caucasian Menace, a
fast-paced espionage/thriller and Once Upon a Decade: Tales of the
Fifties, a collection of short stories dealing
with adventure on the high seas, segregation in the Deep South, Havana
nightlife on the eve of the Castro Revolution, possible witchcraft and
much more.
Judy Berry '81 is the recipient of a 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation. Berry (at right of photo with Albanese-Puccini) was a featured soloist in a Gala Awards Concert held Oct. 24 at Lincoln Center's Frederick P. Rose Hall. The Tri-Cities Opera trained soprano has performed in theaters all over the U.S., Canada, Europe and Australia, and has recorded on the WSW and Orfeo labels. With a repertoire of more than 50 roles performed in major opera houses all over the globe, Berry has been the recipient of numerous awards and a top winner of international vocal competitions.
Laney Liner '94 is a breast cancer survivor of almost four years and is on the board of Moms Who Kick Inc., a Long Island-based charity group which raises money for breast cancer research and women's health. Moms Who Kick Inc. is producing a 2012 calendar to raise funds for breast cancer research, and is looking for model moms at least 18 years of age, and who live in New York, New Jersey or Connecticut. The 2012 Moms Who Kick® calendar will feature photos of athletic and fit women, stylishly dressed, while showcasing the exercise or activity they most enjoy in order to maintain their health. Mindy Menke '02 joined the Buffalo office of law
firm Harris Beach as an associate in the life and asset planning
practice group. Prior to joining Harris Beach, she was an associate in
the estate planning and elder law department at a firm in Goshen, N.Y.
Her practice focuses on estate and trust administration as well as life
and asset planning.
