A recent study by Subimal Chatterjee, professor of marketing, and colleagues at Florida Atlantic University, found that sequels don’t match the box office revenues of the parent films.
The Alumni Association, Department of Continuing Education & Outreach and Harpur College Dean's Office are seeking alumni input on two major initiatives: Harpur's 60th anniversary celebration and enhancing continuing education programs for alumni.
The campus partners will invite alumni to take part in a survey later this year, according to Thomas Kowalik, director of Continuing Education & Outreach. He said the objective is to provide meaningful alumni offerings in conjunction with Harpur's 60th anniversary. In addition, he said the survey is part of an effort to gather information about the types of programs and events that alumni would find beneficial.
"[Our programming should] enhance alumni networking, while being educationally attractive, socially stimulating, and appealing for alumni to attend," Kowalik said. "Binghamton University cares about its alumni, and is trying to strengthen the relationship between the institution and its supporters in a thoughtful, strategic manner."
The market research actually started in October with focus group sessions that took place on campus during Homecoming. Then, in November, the three campus offices named above held several focus group meetings in the New York metro area and in San Francisco. James L. Bauer '68 led four of those two-hour sessions, and said the discussions were very productive.
"During my career, I did a lot of work in the area of market research and product development," Bauer said. "Classical market research starts with a focus group. The main purpose is to gather a wide range of concepts and ideas that are further tested through quantitative research, such as surveys. [Our alumni] gave us hundreds of ideas about what they would like to see as part of the 60th anniversary celebration. Among the things that we learned was that the alumni in the group feel very strongly about Harpur, in particular the education they received, the friends they made (and in many cases still have) and the relationships they had (and in some cases) still have with professors."The Alumni Association will send a broadcast e-mail to alumni with more information about the survey.
