For many students, Friday and Saturday nights are a time to unwind after a busy week of classes and activities. For senior Jessica Laguerre, they're a time to step up the action and fun — safely.

A statement from University President Lois B. DeFleur:
The holiday break provided an opportunity for all of us to spend time with family and friends and to think about the future. It allowed me time to deal with some family issues and an opportunity to carefully consider my personal plans.
Thus, I have informed Chancellor Nancy Zimpher and Council Chair Kathryn Madigan that I intend to retire at the end of July. This past October, I discussed my intentions to retire with Council Chair Madigan, but put those plans on hold to deal with events that took place on campus last semester.
Since then, my life situation has changed. With plans to be married this summer, and with my dear mother in fragile health, I have decided that retiring in July will give me the personal time I need.
These next six months will provide time for the Binghamton University Council to conduct a search for my successor.
I am so proud of the tremendous growth and many achievements that have taken place at the University during my 19-year tenure as President. Binghamton University continues to be recognized nationally and internationally for the excellence of our undergraduate and graduate programs as well as our world-class arts and cultural events. We recruit top students from the state, the country and throughout the world who thrive in our programs and have tremendous success when they graduate. Our rapidly increasing research programs have made significant intellectual contributions and have helped foster economic development in the Southern Tier and throughout the state. I have worked hard to foster our numerous partnerships and collaborations both within the University as well as between the University and the community - all of which have been crucial to our development.
We have a full agenda ahead of us during the spring semester and I will work tirelessly to help us achieve our goals. We need to continue preparation of our self-study for the Middle States accreditation visit. We must also work hard to meet the state budget reductions. We will focus on recruiting high-quality undergraduate and graduate students for next year's entering class, and continue to advance our many campus construction projects. I also expect that in the near future we will receive a report from SUNY regarding its review of intercollegiate athletics and as I said earlier in my communication to Chairman Hayden and Chancellor Zimpher, I am committed to working with them to implement any needed changes in our programs and/or policies.
I would like to thank the Binghamton University Council; the faculty, staff and students; the Alumni and Foundation Boards; as well as the many community leaders for their support and advocacy as we have worked together to make Binghamton University one of the premier public universities in the nation.
I look back on my years at this wonderful University with deep affection and pride. I will always be a strong Binghamton advocate and supporter.
