Chad Robbins, one of the top bowlers in the Binghamton area, took home first prize and $500 in the Binghamton University Alumni Association Bowling Tournament, presented by Liberty Mutual. Almost 40 bowlers - a group that included alumni, current students and members of the local community - participated in this event, held Jan. 22, at Midway Lanes in Vestal.
In this scratch singles tournament, bowlers took part in a three-game qualifying round, on an oil pattern much more difficult than the typical league bowler would encounter. The top four total scorers advanced to a single-elimination stepladder final.
In the first match of the final round, Robbins, the No. 4 qualifier, defeated No. 3 qualifier James Sherman, MS '95, MBA '03, 192-153. Then, Robbins outbowled No. 2 qualifier Billy Karn, 195-183, before defeating top qualifier and defending champion Jeffrey Ripic '08, 215-140, to win the title.
The tournament offered a $10,000 jackpot to any bowler who rolled a 300 game in the final round; however, none of the finalists bowled a perfect game to claim that prize.
