Clark Zlotchew, PhD '74 is the author of the short story collection Once Upon a Decade: Tales of the Fifties (Comfort Publishing, 2010), which was selected as one of three finalists in the 2011 Next Generation Indie Book Awards in the short story category. The awards program - presented by Independent Book Publishing Professionals Group in cooperation with the Allen O’Shea Literary Agency -- recognizes and honors the most exceptional independently published books in 60 different categories.
Patricia Hoyt '80, under the business and pen name Ann Castle, wrote the novel Captured Souls (Intuitive Consulting, 2011), which was featured in the March 28 issue of Publisher's Weekly. The book is a sci-fi thriller set in upstate New York. Divorced parents and a rogue FBI agent unite to find the parents' teenage daughter, who was abducted by extraterrestrial aliens. Sharon Kay Sputz '85 joined 25 other professional women recently in being recognized for their workplace achievements at the 37th Annual Tribute to Women and Industry Awards Dinner, hosted by the YWCA of Bergen County, N.J. The event highlighted the contributions of the honorees in their managerial, executive or professional roles, as well as recognized the companies that provide women with opportunities for career advancement. Sharon works in business development for BAE Systems, Inc., in Woodland Park, N.J.
Annie Rohan '87 is one of four registered nurses recently awarded scholarships by the March of Dimes for graduate studies in the field of maternal-child nursing. The March of Dimes Graduate Nursing Scholarship was founded in 1997 to recognize and promote excellence in the nursing care of mothers and babies. Recipients receive $5,000 to continue their graduate maternal-child nursing studies. Rohan is pursuing a PhD in nursing from Columbia University. She is a neonatal nurse practitioner and a pediatric nurse practitioner.
Martha Langhorne, MS '88, was the 2011 recipient of the Oncology Nursing Society Pearl Moore Making a Difference Award. Langhorne is a nurse practitioner at Binghamton Gastroenterology. The award recognizes her significant contributions to the oncology nursing profession at the local and regional levels.
David Kilpatrick MA '94, PhD '01, is the author of Writing with Blood: The Sacrificial Dramatist as Tragic Man
(Eye Corner Press, 2011), a book about ecstatic states of consciousness
that allow for a new form of subjectivity. He is associate professor
of English literature and philosophy at Mercy College.
James R. Barnes '00 was elected chair of the 3,415-member Young Lawyers Section of the New York State Bar Association. Barnes, an associate at Albany law firm Burke & Casserly, concentrates his practice on elder law, trusts and estates, business succession planning and real estate. He co-chairs the Young Lawyers Committee of the Albany County Bar Association.
