Paola FajardoDoctoral student's passion: human rights
Paola Fajardo traces her interest in human rights to her childhood in Colombia, which has endured more than 60 years of armed conflict. Her time at Binghamton has given her new tools to study the issue and has enabled her to give back.

 

Prof. Jean QuataertProfessor's book examines history of human rights
History professor Jean Quataert's new book says that average people have helped to shape the global human rights movement. Her book, Advocating Dignity: Human Rights Mobilizations in Global Politics, takes the reader from the mid-20th century into the early 21st century, from the emergence of the human rights system in 1945 to the replacement of the United Nations’ Human Rights Commission with a Human Rights Council in 2005. In between, Quataert embarks on an ambitious and thematic journey in which she establishes global contexts for the work of human rights advocates.

Quincy LoneyDoctoral student has equation for success
Quincy Loney’s research focuses on vertex operator algebras. But, along with his intense research, he always strives to be a helpful teacher. Late last year, he chaired the second-annual Binghamton University Graduate Conference in Algebra and Topology, a two-day event which brought together more than 150 graduate students in mathematics and more than 40 speakers from around the world.

Samantha TuchfeldSenior branches out to make a difference
English major Samantha Tuchfeld has a full plate. As a student leader in such groups as Challah for Hunger, the Food Co-op and WHRW, among many others, she is tireless in her efforts to help others and make the world a better place.

University clock towerSOM ranked 12th in the nation
BusinessWeek released its rankings of undergraduate business programs and the School of Management made significant gains, moving up six slots among public institutions to 12th place -- up from last year’s ranking of 18th. The school also jumped 13 spots to 35th among all undergraduate programs in the nation.

Associate Professor Shelley Dionne and Professor Subimal Chatterjee received the SOM's 2008-09 faculty awards. Dean Upinder Dhillon presented the awards during a faculty reception held in the SOM Student Lounge on Friday, March 19.

SOM Spotlight event

On March 22, SOM students held their annual spotlight event at Old Union Hall. Art Ventura '93 (at right with Provost Mary Ann Swain), senior vice president of advertising sales for MSG Media, was a featured speaker and told students that SOM has a stellar reputation in the business world. He encouraged them to keep working hard on case competitions, internships, and other endeavors. The event celebrates the school's accomplishments and raised money for the Class of 2010 Senior Challenge.

Computer science classComputer science class seeks more success in FAA design competition
Last year, two designs worked on by 44 students from Associate Professor William Ziegler’s Professional Ethics and Communications computer science class took first place in the Federal Aviation Administration Design Competition. The competition, which draws interest from schools nationwide, asks undergraduate and graduate students to create engineering solutions for airport-related issues. Student engineers hope to remain at the forefront of innovative aviation planning by defending their awards in 2010.

Prof. Karen BromleyProfessor serves literacy non-profit
Karen Bromley of the Graduate School of Education is serving a three-year term, ending in 2011, on the International Reading Association’s Board of Directors, a position held by only 11 others. A distinguished teaching professor, she is now providing leadership and instruction to an organization with more than 70,000 members.
