Jones to receive Kennedy Center honors
In early December, a former Binghamton University student will receive one of the nation's highest awards in performing arts and you'll be able to see the recognition ceremony on television later in the month.
Bill T. Jones joins four others earning honors from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. During the Kennedy Center's 33rd annual recognition event, which will take place Sunday, Dec. 5., Jones will join Paul McCartney, Oprah Winfrey, Merle Haggard and Jerry Herman as the honorees for 2010.
The honors gala will be broadcast in a two-hour prime-time special at 9 p.m. (Eastern/Pacific) Tuesday, Dec. 28, on CBS.
"The Kennedy Center celebrates five individuals who have spent their lives enriching, inspiring and elevating the cultural vibrancy of our nation and the world," said Kennedy Center Chairman David M. Rubenstein. "The inventive style and imaginative artistry of Bill T. Jones has had an invaluable impact on the varied landscapes of dance and theater."
Seated with the President of the United States and Mrs. Obama, the honorees will accept the thanks of their peers and fans through performances and tributes. The president and his wife will receive the honorees at the White House prior to the gala performance.
The Kennedy Center Honors medallions will be presented on Saturday, Dec. 4, the night before the gala, at a dinner hosted by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
