Volunteer spotlight - Jose Moreira '00, MBA '03

As a Binghamton University wrestler, Jose Moreira '00, MBA '03, loved the competition and the friendships he made. When the team was disbanded in 2004, he was heartbroken. He says one of his most meaningful experiences as an alumni volunteer was serving on a committee that helped reinstate the squad the following year.
 
"Anytime you have a determined, passionate group of alumni working together toward a common goal, anything is possible," he says.
 
The University is also close to his heart because it's where he met his wife, Felicia Malarkey '01, MA '02, and got the foundation for a successful career in business. He is COO for Cleaner's Supply in Conklin, N.Y. Each year, he participates in the School of Management's mentoring and networking event, held during Homecoming weekend. He advises students on how they can make the transition from campus into an increasingly competitive job market.
 
"Everything influences who you are, and this experience at Binghamton helped me to become successful," he says. "It's the least I can do to give back. I want to see students have the same experiences that I had."
 
Moreira decided he could do more, and joined the Alumni Association Board of Directors in July. He looks forward to meeting alumni, talking to them about their Binghamton University experiences and finding volunteer opportunities that they will find satisfying. He agrees with Raymond Russolillo '80, new board president, that the association wants more alumni to feel they belong to the University community.

"The Alumni Association is ready to make the next step forward to get a greater number of alumni involved," he says. "This was a great time for me to get further engaged, and I hope I can look back in five years and say I was part of something that really made a difference."
