Artists' work honors Binghamton experience and mentors

Alan Lupiani '88, MBA '91 and Kerry Law '90 - classmates and Brooklyn-based painters - feel indebted to Binghamton University, saying their experiences were truly life-changing. It's one reason why they chose to share their artwork with members of the University community.

Full Circle, a two-person exhibition is taking place at the University Art Museum's Rosefsky Gallery until Sept. 28. Gallery hours are 1-4 p.m., Tuesdays-Fridays. An opening reception took place at the gallery on Sept. 14.

Since graduating from Binghamton University, Law and Lupiani (pictured left to right above) have continued to create paintings, and both have been employed in art education for almost 20 years. Law is a high school art teacher in Westchester County and Lupiani is studio manager for the AICAD/New York Studio Residency Program in Brooklyn.

They reunited in 2010, when Lupiani curated Law's paintings for a one-person show in Brooklyn, titled, "I Can Hear the Ocean." Law and Lupiani have been active in the Brooklyn art scene as well as in the rest of the city and abroad. 

Earlier this year, Lupiani asked Law if they could pitch a two-person show to Binghamton University, which would celebrate their accomplishments and honor their mentors. Law (his painting "Dead Trees" is pictured at left) studied primarily under figurative based professors David Shapiro and Don DeMauro, while Lupiani studied with abstract expressionist Angelo Ippolito. The contrast in styles of these professors in relation to Law and Lupiani's matured artistic development set the stage to present a painting exhibition which offers perspective to the education both received at Binghamton and also bridges the past into the present.

The artists set up their works in the Rosefsky Gallery on new-student move-in day. "I was here on move-in day 28 years ago," Lupiani says. "It was so emotional. Being here today, this is full circle, literally."
