Message from President Lois B. DeFleur

I welcome you and your student to Binghamton University. Our undergraduate programs are widely regarded as among the best in the nation, and we provide students with the range of academic opportunities usually available only at the largest research institutions, while maintaining a commitment to individual excellence found only at select smaller campuses.

Several ingredients contribute to our tradition of excellence. First, the University's faculty are committed to their teaching and provide students with unique opportunities for service and research. Our General Education program develops students' intellectual breadth and fosters a solid foundation for more advanced academic work. Harpur College offers 39 different majors, while our five professional schools prepare students for leadership in a variety of fields. Many students pursue multiple majors or participate in accelerated five-year programs that combine bachelor's and master's degrees. I also encourage all students to enhance their education through one of many opportunities in international education at Binghamton, widely recognized as a leader in the development of global awareness.

Beyond the classroom, students thrive in our residential communities, designed from the Oxford University model. In these living-learning communities, faculty masters and fellows guide students through special leadership and learning opportunities. Students also benefit from our Discovery Program, which helps them transition to college through explorations of academic interests and opportunities for social growth, and provides dedicated academic support, career information, mentoring and tutoring.

We are proud that we attract many of the best students from New York state, across the nation and countries around the globe, and prouder still that they achieve so much during their time at Binghamton. We see the proof of their success in our exceptional graduation rates and the accomplishments of our alumni.
