2011 Exemplary Student Award
In November, the Alumni Association announced the finalists of the 2011 Exemplary Student Award Competition. The awards presentation will take place during the indoor tailgate party at Winter Madness, planned for Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, at the West Gym.
The award honors outstanding Binghamton University students. Applicants were judged on criteria including involvement on and off campus, University knowledge, personality and communication, academic strength, honors and awards, and overall impression.
Grand Prize Winner (full tuition for one semester)
Ronald Ziemba '12
Ziemba is an actuarial science and economics double major in Harpur College, and entered the Exemplary Student Award competition with a 3.9 GPA. He is a Phi Beta Kappa inductee and member of the Binghamton University Scholars Program. Ziemba is a transfer credit intern in Harpur Academic Advising as a third-time Faculty-Student Scholarship recipient. He has also been a recipient of the Sodexo Scholarship (three consecutive years), Barbara & Allan Pollack Scholarship, and Guardian Life Insurance Company of America Award. This is his third year as a resident assistant and as a Hinman College Student Fellow. In the past, he has been a teaching assistant for the Department of Economics, a volunteer housing analyst for the Office of Residential Life, and a member of the Crew Team. Ziemba is a National Advanced Placement Scholar and was salutatorian of his graduating class at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. He intends to pursue a career as an actuary, and has completed three actuarial exams and a summer internship in the field.

Allison Jaekle '12
Jaekle, a history major from Smithtown, N.Y., is a recipient of a Harpur Fellow Scholarship. She is also the recipient of an Allstate Foundation Insurance Scholarship, given to high school seniors in the top one percent of their class, and renewed each year students are enrolled in college and maintain a high GPA. In addition, Jaekle is a part of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Alpha Theta (international history honor society), National Residence Hall Honorary, Sigma Alpha Lambda , and Phi Eta Sigma. She is involved with Harpur’s Ferry, Chamber Orchestra, Student Environmental Action Coalition, Outdoors Club, and served as a vice president of Cascade Hall Government, as well as a Transfer Mentor in Hillside. She was a teaching assistant in the Decker School of Nursing. She is a third-year resident assistant in Hillside Community, and interning for the University’s Environmental/Global Studies department and Office of Recycling and Resource Management.3rd Place ($400 for campus bookstore)
Amanda Winer
The Westborough, Mass., native is studying history, Judaic studies, and classical civilization in Harpur College. She is a member of Phi Alpha Theta and has received the Helen Anne B. Rivlin Scholarship, Benjamin and Ann Schecter Scholarship, Faculty-Student Scholarship, Provost Academic Scholarship and Foundation Annual Award. She has served as a tutor in the Binghamton University Writing Center, teaching assistant for both the history and Judaic studies departments, president of the 2012 Senior Class Council (during junior year) and currently vice president of public affairs for the 2012 Class Council. Among her many involvements, she is a tour guide and marketing intern for the Binghamton University Writing Initiative, chapter coordinator for Challah for Hunger, and founder of Shoreshim, Jewish Environmental Initiative. Winer is a service ambassador for the University’s Center for Civic Engagement, participates in the English Conversation Pairs Program, and coordinates education and advocacy for all Challah for Hunger chapters worldwide.
