Research Interests

J. Koji Lum, professor of anthropology and biological sciences and director of the Laboratory of Evolutionary Anthropology and Health (LEAH), is a molecular anthropologist and evolutionary biologist whose research focuses on the origins, interactions, and resulting genetic characteristics of Pacific Island populations; the evolution of Plasmodium falciparum drug resistance; malaria epidemiology in Melanesia, Southeast Asia and Africa; interactions among modernization and infectious and chronic diseases; ancient DNA; evolution of mineral imbedded microbial communities; forensic genetics; animal and plant domestication; behavioral genetics; and molecular evolution.

The Laboratory of Evolutionary Anthropology and Health (LEAH)

LEAH is a series of three laboratories that includes a population genetics laboratory equipped with high throughput extraction, PCR, and Sanger sequencing capabilities, an independent ancient DNA laboratory, and a new facility to culture and transfect Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasites expected to become fully functional in 2013.
