What’s Next? Graduate Studies and Career Planning for Art History Majors

For many art history majors, the burning question they face as their undergraduate studies draw to a close is: what on earth do I do with an art history degree? The answer, in fact, is quite a lot. Students graduating with a major in Art History, Architectural History, or Pre-Architecture have a wide variety of post-graduate options, both for further study, and also in the marketplace. Graduating students might consider the following options:

• Graduate study in art history or the history of architecture
• Graduate study in art education, non-profit administration, arts administration, curatorial studies
• Professional training: law school, MBA, education (for primary or secondary school teaching), art therapy
• Jobs in museums, art galleries, and auction houses, or in arts management organization (such as those working with artists’ rights management, or image management)
• Jobs in government or business requiring excellent research and writing skills, and an ability to analyze visual information
• Jobs in publishing, such as academic presses, art magazines, or newspapers
