2000s

Edwin M. McGowan (PhD '03) - Currently Science Director for the Palisades Interstate Park Commission (NYS), which manages 110K acres of parkland in NY and northern NJ, and Director of Trailside Museums and Zoo at Bear Mountain State Park. He recently received a NYS DEC State Wildlife Initiative Grant (SWIG) to do telemetry, field surveys, and rearing of hatchling box, spotted and wood turtles. As Science Director, he is on the Steering Committee of the Highlands Environmental Research Institute at Sterling Forest State Park, is the Leader and Steering Committee member of the Lower Hudson Partnership for Invasive Species Management (PRISM), is Chair of the Highlands Ecological Research and Management Subcommittee of the Highlands Coalition, and is a member of the Research and Management Subcommittee of the Shawangunk Ridge Biodiversity Partnership.

Jason R. Rohr (PhD '02) - Assistant Professor, 2006, Department of Biological Sciences University of South Florida, Tampa, was invited to present a talk at the USGS and EPA sponsored International Meeting in St. Louis on "Understanding agriculture's effects on amphibians and reptiles in a changing world." He also just received an EPA grant for $598,628 on "Understanding the role of climate change and land use on pathogen invasions and the decline of ectotherms," and has been awarded over $1.4 million in research funds from EPA, USDA and NSF since 2006. He supervises a research lab of 3 postdocs, a technician and 3 graduate students.

Patrick McCullough (PhD '02) - High school teacher, Lakeland Central School District, Shrub Oak, NY.

Xiaoyan Li (MA '02) - Researcher at BioMarker Strategies, Baltimore, MD.

Anthony T. Corcoran (MS '01) - Graduated from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine with a Doctor of Medicine degree and recognition in the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He is now completing a residency in Urologic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Victor S. Lamoureux (PhD '00) - Award winning nature photographer and noted High School science educator, just obtained funding from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation to conduct census and radio-tracking research on a previously unknown population of Map Turtles in the Susquehanna River near Vestal, NY.

Patrick Boyd (PhD '00) - Acting Dean of Sciences and Associate Professor of Chemistry, Utica College.

John C. Maerz (PhD '00) - Assistant Professor, 2005, Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, University of Georgia, Athens. He was just named an Associate Editor of the Journal of Wildlife Management, hosted the 2008 annual meeting of Southeast Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation, and was just interviewed in "Science News" concerning his lab's discovery of a mass die-off of southern leopard frog tadpoles caused by a new bacteria pathogen. He currently supervises 6 PhD and 4 MS students and has written over $1.3 million in funded grants since 2005.

Sang-beom Seo (PhD '99) - Senior Research Scientist, Genome Research Center, Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology.

Sushmita Singh (PhD '98) - Research Associate, BioMedical Genomics Center, University of Minnesota, St. Paul, MN.

Xiaowen Liu (PhD '98) - Senior Research Scientist, Osel Inc., Santa Clara, CA.

KangMoon Lee (PhD '97) - Senior Research Scientist, LG Corp., Daeduk, South Korea.

Mary Russell Graziano (MA '96) - Adjunct Instructor, Lemoyne University, Syracuse, NY.

Silvia Brown (MA '94) - Postdoctoral fellow, Microbiology and Immunology, University of Buffalo, Buffalo, NY.

Roman Guinnan (MA '93) - Assistant Professor, Albany Medical School, Albany, NY.

Bill Romey (PhD '93) - is a tenured Associate Professor in the Biology Department at Potsdam University, New York. Bill is well known for his innovative teaching, and although not a degree-granting institution, is very active in research and publishing. His topics deal especially with the biology of whirligig beetles, as well as other insects, and examine various aspects of behavior, including modeling of social interactions.

1980s

Richard C. Birkmeyer (PhD '80) - Sold the company he founded, Strategic Diagnostics, which is now trading on Wall Street as SDIX. The company is constantly in the news as it markets testing of tainted foods (received 11/07).

Rani Kapur (MA '88) - Physician.

Peter Petokas (PhD '87) - Research Associate, Lycoming College Clean Water Institute and member of the Susquehanna River Heartland Coalition for Environmental Studies, was recently featured in a WVIA (PBS) documentary entitled "Expedition Susquehanna," This is an account of Dr. Petokas' effort to maintain clean waterways for the preservation of hellbender salamanders in Pennsylvania.

Gregory Papastoitsis (MA '87) - Senior Research Scientist, Syntronix Pharmaceuticals, Waltham, MA.

William J. McShea (PhD '85) - A senior staff wildlife ecologist at the Smithsonian Institution's National Zoological Park and Conservation and Research Center for Rare and Endangered Species of Animals. He recently was USA's wildlife and conservation expert in a recent trip to China [in a group of 7 including George Bush Sr., William Perry (ex-secretary of defense) and Roger Porter (ex-economic advisor for Presidents Bush and Reagan)] that discussed, among other things, international policy relating to conservation issues. Since 1985, he has authored over 60 peer reviewed papers and another 35 publications on diverse animal species from around the world. He is currently an Adjunct or Affiliated Associate or Full Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, George Mason University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Utah State University, and a Guest Research Scientist at Peking University.

Randall FitzGerald (PhD '84) - Associate Professor, Montclair State University School of Conservation. He is now working with anthropologist Dr. William Thomas on a unique field guide to New Guinea birds (incorporating indigenous knowledge) which will be published by Conservation International.

Marian Madden (MA '83) - Physician

1970s

Joanne Crowley MD (MA '79) - received her MD degree from Boston University School of Medicine. She did her residency training at UCLA and is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine. Dr. Crowley currently practices Emergency Medicine at a large Trauma Center in Southern California. Dr. Crowley also worked as a Research Biochemist for Dupont before receiving her MD.
