Some faculty are primarily affiliated with their departments and conduct research that originates from questions in a particular discipline, such as biology, chemistry, sociology, or history. The interdisciplinary nature of some of today's most pressing questions-questions involving human genomics, materials science, cell biology, bioengineering and biomedicine-frequently requires the expertise of faculty from several departments. Often these cross-disciplinary connections develop into permanent working relationships.
University faculty have formalized these connections through Binghamton University's Center for Excellence, through organized research centers, and institutes for advanced studies. These organizations offer equipment and expertise that may be accessed by researchers across the disciplines and by members of the community who need specialized services. The organizations also serve as one of the University's most important links to the larger local, regional and global communities of which it is a vital part.
