The Binghamton University Foundation grants approximately $50,000 annually in undergraduate and graduate student awards from its restricted and unrestricted funds. Consideration for awards is given to students who have been nominated by faculty, staff or fellow students. Award recipients are selected by representatives of the various academic departments or organizations that sponsor the award to recognize excellence and to honor students for exemplary service. No application process exists for awards, differing in this respect from scholarships and fellowships. Notification is made either at recognition ceremonies for senior students or at the spring Honors Day Program honoring award recipients.
Award for Outstanding Performance in Athletics: Presented to a graduating senior who has shown outstanding leadership and performance in athletics.
Award for Outstanding Performance in Extracurricular Activities: Awarded to a graduating senior who has shown outstanding performance and leadership in extracurricular activities.
Barnes & Noble/Wanda Bartle Book Award: This award provides a female undergraduate student with a semester’s worth of textbooks from the University Bookstore. The recipient is selected by the University Women and should have a minimum 3.0 GPA with financial need. The student should also be involved in community service or intend to enter a profession oriented toward helping others.
John Benson EOP Student Award: Awarded to a current Educational Opportunity Program student who has made significant contributions and/or efforts on behalf of the EOP and its students. The student may be a current EOP senior expected to graduate in May, or have graduated in the previous December, and must be in good academic standing.
John Bilos Alumni Athletic Award: Given to a graduating senior female and a graduating senior male who have shown outstanding performance in athletics.
Jerry E. Cunningham Memorial Award: Established in memory of the coordinator of financial assistance for Binghamton’s Educational Opportunity Program. This award is given to an EOP student with a minimum 2.5 GPA, who has an unmet financial need and the ability to demonstrate experience or interest in human services as evidenced by career goals, an internship and/or extracurricular activities.
Dorot Travel Grant: Awarded to assist undergraduate and a limited number of graduate and professional students who wish to participate in an academic program in Israel. Dorot Foundation Travel Grants are awarded with consideration for the financial need of the student.
Mary V. Faughnan Memorial Award: Awarded to a graduating senior who, through his or her own high standards for individual conduct and participation in campus activities, contributes to the quality of campus life.
Richard Hall Humanitarian Award: Given to an African American student with at least a 2.5 GPA who has made local, national or global contributions to the African American community via the University.
Fred Handte Memorial Award: Established in 1988 in memory of Fred Handte, 1987 editor-in-chief of the student newspaper pipe dream. This award is given to a junior or senior involved with pipe dream.
Edward A. Imm Award: Established in memory of a founding member of the Public Relations Society of the Southern Tier, awarded to an outstanding graduating senior who intends to pursue a career in public relations.
Nell Jackson Memorial Award: Established in honor of the late director of physical education and athletics at Binghamton, awarded to an outstanding graduating female student-athlete.
Orthopedic Associates Student Trainer Award: Donated by Orthopedic Associates, awarded to a graduating senior who has significantly contributed to the athletic program and the care of athletes at Binghamton. The award is based on dedication, leadership and willingness to learn about the sports medicine field.
Outstanding Hispanic-American Student Award: Awarded to acknowledge outstanding academic achievement as well as services and contributions to the University and/or local community by a graduating senior of Hispanic descent.
Mrs. Francis Pettus Memorial Incentive Scholarship Award: Awarded to an African American freshman for outstanding achievement and promise of leadership.
Pauline J. Piaker Memorial Award: Established in 1996 by Professor Philip M. Piaker in memory of his wife. The award is based on an essay pertaining to harmonizing relations between Jewish and other ethnic groups.
Henrietta L. Pitler Award: Established by Lawrence Pitler, presented to a graduating senior female who has excelled both as a scholar and as a student leader.
Jake Pitler Athletic Award: Established by Lawrence Pitler and presented to a graduating senior male who has contributed to athletics at Binghamton. The award is based on athletic achievement, leadership and other meaningful contributions to the University and is not limited to varsity athletics.
Mary Richardson Award: Established in honor of the first associate vice president for student life, who retired in 1981. This award is given to an outstanding student organization at Convocation.
Ringle Award for Academic Excellence: Presented to a graduate student for significant scholarly achievement in the program in philosophy and computers and cognitive science.
Rishel/Searles Memorial Award: Awarded to a graduating senior with outstanding academic excellence and service to the University and/or the community.
1986 Senior Class Award: Given to either a sophomore, junior, or senior who has exhibited a strong involvement in campus activities and has maintained a B average or its equivalent.
Albert Tillman Memorial Award: Awarded in memory of a former EOP student to a graduating senior in the Educational Opportunity Program with the best achievement record.
Ursula H. Africa Award: Established by Professor Thomas Africa in memory of Ursula Africa. This award is given to two sophomore students for outstanding performance in German.
Aswad Family Award for Excellence: Given to an outstanding graduating senior who reflects high ethical ideals and has been accepted to a medical school.
Awards for Academic Excellence: Given to three graduating seniors for their superior academic achievement.
Awards for Creative Work in the Fine Arts: Presented to four students, one each in art, cinema, music and theatre.
Award for Excellence in Arabic: Given to an outstanding graduating student of Arabic.
Award for Excellence in Biochemistry: Presented annually to outstanding senior biochemistry majors, based on their academic excellence and research capability.
Award for Excellence in Economics: Presented annually to a graduating senior demonstrating scholarship and promise of a career in economics.
Award for Excellence in Mathematical Sciences: Given to the outstanding graduating senior majoring in mathematical sciences.
Award for Excellence in Political Science: Presented to a graduating senior for demonstrated excellence in academic study, research, writing and/or application of knowledge in the field of political science.
Cecil Bacheller Award for Excellence in Romance Languages and Literatures: Awarded annually to a graduating major in the department with the highest achievement.
Stevenson Barrett Memorial Award: Established by Professor Emerita Roberta Schlosser. This award was named to honor a former music faculty member (1971-78) and a distinguished, internationally known vocal coach and accompanist. The award is presented to the Music Department senior who achieves the highest level of vocal performance or vocal accompaniment.
Lathrop V. Beale Prize in Sociology: Given in honor of Professor Beale by the Sociology Department to an undergraduate submitting the best essay or term paper in a sociology course.
Helen P. Beard Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Mathematics: Established by Gerald Miller ’67 in honor of Professor Beard, who retired in 1982. This award is given to a Harpur College junior or senior mathematics major who plans to pursue a college teaching career.
Alfred Bendixen Prize: Established in 1999 by Harpur College alumnus Dr. Alfred Bendixen. It is awarded annually to the student who writes the best honors thesis as determined by a committee of English Department faculty.
Jack Berman Theatre Award: Given annually to outstanding third-year undergraduates in the Theatre Department, in either the performance or production areas, whose service and achievement creates an expectation of significant contribution in the student’s senior year.
Claudia Bernardo Memorial Award for Excellence in Humanities: Established by Distinguished Service Professor Aldo S. Bernardo, chair of the Humanities Division during 1959-67, in memory of his wife. It is given annually to two graduating seniors for outstanding work in a humanities discipline, excluding the fine arts.
Cingranelli Prize in American Politics and Public Policy: Established by Matthew Shafit ’81, awarded to a graduating senior who excels in political science and has completed an internship with a government agency.
Class of ’52 Glenn G. Bartle Award in Geology: Given to an outstanding graduating senior in geological sciences who best emulates Glenn Bartle’s ideal of academic excellence. The award is named for the first president of Harpur College.
Constance Coiner Undergraduate Prize: Criteria for selection include a GPA of 3.0 or above; quality and range of courses taken; evidence of community and/or extracurricular involvement in activities reflecting a desire to promote social change; and quality of a 1,000- to 1,250-word essay on a topic developed by the committee.
Helen Bohmer Daly Memorial Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research in Psychology: Awarded to a graduating senior who is a psychology major and has shown excellence in research through the completion of an honors project in psychology; the presentation of a poster or talk that describes a research project at the Psychology Department Research Fair or at a national conference; a paper published in a journal; or any paper that describes a research project completed in a laboratory in the Psychology Department.
Ralph Digman Prize in Geology: Awarded by the Department of Geological Sciences to an outstanding senior geology major.
George R. Dunham Poetry Prize: Awarded annually to a graduating student whose poems have been selected in open competition by an outside judge.
Portia Dunham Award in Fiction: Presented annually to a graduating creative writing student whose work in fiction has been selected in open competition by an outside judge.
Faculty Award for Excellence and Service in Anthropology: Awarded to recognize the achievements and contributions of a graduating senior anthropology major who has an outstanding record of academic excellence, has made significant service contributions to the department, and has enhanced undergraduate-faculty interaction.
Filley Award in International Relations: Presented to a political science major who has performed unusually well in the international aspect of the department’s program.
Friars Foundation Scholarship/Award: Presented to students engaged in the study of the performing arts — drama, music and/or theater design. Selection made by entire Theatre Department faculty.
Philip Friedheim Memorial Award: This memorial fund honors Professor Friedheim, a member of the music faculty for several years before his death in 1987. It is presented to an outstanding graduating master’s student in any field of music specialization.
John L. Fuller Memorial Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research in Psychobiology: Established in memory of John L. Fuller, former distinguished faculty member in the Psychology Department. It is awarded annually to an outstanding graduating senior who has shown excellence in the area of research in psychobiology.
Fran Garside Award for Environmental Studies: Developed by the League of Women Voters of Broome and Tioga Counties. This award is in honor of Fran Garside, a distinguished member of the league. It provides an award to a full- or part-time student who is enrolled in an environmental studies degree program and needs financial support. Preference is given to a non-traditional student.
Eugene C. Gerhart Senior Law Award: Presented to the graduating senior holding the highest overall GPA at the end of the first semester of the senior year who has been accepted at an accredited law school.
Amy M. Gilbert Prize in History: Presented annually to an outstanding graduating senior for excellence in history.
Mathew Goldstein Memorial Scholarship Award: Presented to an outstanding graduating senior in anthropology who is planning to pursue a graduate career in anthropology or related endeavors.
James D. Grierson Award for Excellence in Botany: Established in memory of Professor Grierson, who devoted his teaching career to inspiring botany students. This award is given to a graduating senior majoring in biology who has demonstrated excellence in and enthusiasm for the botanical sciences.
Guardian Life Insurance Company of America Award: Given annually in the spring and fall to two graduating seniors on the basis of their performance in preparatory courses and successful completion of Part I of the actuarial exam.
Jason Matthew Hendler Memorial Award: Established by Scott Michael Hendler ’99 in memory of his brother. The award was established so that the memory of Jason’s life shall ever remain a source of inspiration for deeds of charity and goodness. This award is given annually to a graduating senior student of Harpur College who has done deeds of charity and goodness for people, the environment and/or charitable organizations. Academic excellence is not a criterion for selection.
Daniel Hoffmann ’82 Award: Awarded to an undergraduate student of the Department of Economics. The student awardee must agree to return to the Economics Department at Binghamton University in three to five years to report to economics students and faculty on his/her activities.
Albert V. House Prize in History: Established in memory of Professor House, who taught at Binghamton from 1948 when it was known as Triple Cities College. This award is given to a distinguished graduating senior majoring in U.S. history.
C. Max Hull Award in Undergraduate Organic Chemistry: Awarded by the Department of Chemistry to an undergraduate for work in organic chemistry.
Italian-American Memorial Award: Established by a local Italian American group in honor of Aldo S. Bernardo, first professor of Italian at Binghamton. It is awarded annually to an undergraduate and a graduate student for outstanding work in Italian studies.
Jewish Federation of Broome County Award for Excellence in Hebrew Studies: Awarded to a graduating senior excelling in Hebrew language and culture.
Walter E. Kaskan Award in Physical Chemistry: Award is given to a graduating senior demonstrating excellence in physical chemistry. Recipient is selected by chemistry faculty each spring semester based on recommendation from the physical subdivision.
Stanley K. Madan Award in Inorganic Chemistry: Awards a scientific book of the student’s choosing to a graduating senior demonstrating excellence in inorganic chemistry.
George E. Moore Award for Academic Achievement in Physics: Established by family and friends in memory of Professor Moore. This award is presented to seniors majoring in any physics program.
Most Promising Translator Awards, Undergraduate and Graduate: Gift by Translators of Western New York to Binghamton’s Translation Research and Instruction Program (TRIP), awarded to the most promising undergraduate and graduate translators.
Music Faculty Award: Given to an outstanding graduating senior who majored in music.
Samuel Newhouse Foundation Award: Provides an annual award for outstanding graduate students in fiction and in poetry.
Carolyn A. Novogrodsky Memorial Art Award: Established by Bernice Mednick Reinharth ’69 in memory of her niece. The award is given to an art major with a specialty in painting. Selection is made by the Art Department faculty.
Martin A. Paul Award in Chemistry: Established to honor a member of the original faculty of Harpur College, is presented to a graduating senior for excellence in chemistry.
Jacob and Sarah Piaker Memorial Award for Excellence in Judaic Studies: Presented by Philip and Abraham Piaker in honor of their parents. The award is given to a graduating senior in Judaic studies.
Edward H. Prentice Award: Established through Mr. Prentice’s estate to honor a graduating senior who has demonstrated distinguished character, scholarship and contribution to the academic and extracurricular life of the University.
Emilio Roma III Memorial Award: Awarded to an outstanding graduating senior for academic excellence and extra-ordinary service rendered to the program in philosophy, politics and law during the academic year.
Ruth Friedland Seiwatz Memorial Award: Established by the late Professor Isadore Friedland in memory of his daughter, awarded to an outstanding graduating senior.
Alex and Betty Shrift Award for Excellence in Scientific Writing: Established in memory of Professor Shrift, who taught at Binghamton from 1966 until his death in 1992. This award is given to a senior student who has demonstrated excellence in scientific writing.
N. Theodore Sommer Pre-Law Award: Established in honor of the past Foundation president and Harpur College alumnus of 1958. The award is given to a junior with an outstanding record of academic achievement who plans to attend law school and who has demonstrated a commitment to community service, either on or off campus.
Susquenango Kennel Club Award: Given to an outstanding senior Broome, Chenango, Delaware or Tioga County resident (or out-of-area recipient if there are no local candidates). A strong academic record and acceptance into veterinary school are the primary award criteria.
Mildred Sweet Memorial Liberal Arts Award: Endowed by Mrs. Sweet’s husband, awarded to an outstanding undergraduate student for academic excellence in the liberal arts.
Dale B. Terry Award: Established in memory of Dale Terry, director of admissions and student development from 1970 to 1975. This award is given to a senior majoring in biology, chemistry or physics who has shown the greatest improvement in his or her major field.
Theatre Department Award: Given to an outstanding graduating senior for outstanding service and achievement in theater production.
Annette Van Howe Awards for Academic Achievement: Given to a sophomore and a junior woman having the highest scholastic average in their respective classes.
Vasilew Award in Rhetoric: Established in honor of Professor Eugene Vasilew, founder and former director of the rhetoric program, given to a rhetoric major.
Don A. Watters Award: Awarded to a graduating senior in recognition of outstanding service and achievement in theater and dance.
Bruce Weinberg Memorial Award: Established in memory of a psychology student who died in 1981. This award is given to a student involved in psychological counseling services to students.
Edward Weisband Award for Distinguished Achievement in Political Science: Established by Professor Weisband, awarded to a graduating senior in political science with an outstanding academic record who has, in addition, made a distinguished contribution to the undergraduate program while in political science at Harpur College, and who has demonstrated a deep commitment to public affairs and public service.
James H. Wilmoth Awards for Excellence in Biology: Established in memory of Professor Wilmoth. Two awards are given to graduating seniors with outstanding academic records in biology or biochemistry.
Edward N. Wilson Jr. Art Award: Awarded annually, if sufficient income is available, to a full-time African American undergraduate art student with proven financial need. Preference is given to a student with a concentration in sculpture.
Award for Academic Excellence: Presented to an outstanding graduating senior.
The Decker Foundation Award for Clinical and Academic Excellence: Presented to a graduating student in the baccalaureate accelerated track program. The award recognizes academic excellence based on a Binghamton University GPA of 3.9 or above in all upper-division nursing coursework and excellence in clinical practice.
Mary Pillepich Award for Excellence in Nursing Practice: Presented to a graduating senior to recognize excellence in clinical practice.
Award for Academic Excellence: Presented to an outstanding graduating senior student.
Bookbridge SEHD Human Development Undergraduate Book Award: Established to benefit School of Education and Human Development undergraduate student(s) for the purpose of obtaining books, software and other related supplies. The SEHD Scholarship Selection Committee determines the appropriate recipient(s) using the following guidelines: Candidates must be matriculated full- or part- time students in the human development degree program determined to be in good academic standing; preference is given to non-traditional students age 25 or older; they must have financial need; and they must not already have benefited from a private scholarship awarded through the School of Education and Human Development for the current award year.
HSBC Bank, USA Award for Excellence in the School of Education and Human Development: Given to an outstanding senior student in SEHD, for academic excellence combined with other areas of service, accomplishment or special participation.
Award for Academic Excellence: Presented to an outstanding graduating senior.
Donna Curley Memorial Accounting Award: Established in memory of Donna Curley ’89. This award is given to an outstanding female junior accounting major.
Thomas J. Kelly Memorial Summer Research Award: Established by Thomas F. Kelly in memory of his father. This award is given to a doctoral student for summer research.
Lawrence Knaphle Award in International Management: Established in 1989 by Lawrence Knaphle. This award is given to an outstanding graduate student who has excelled in the field of international management research, as demonstrated by the best paper or research project.
U. S. Greene Award in Auditing: Endowed by Urban S. Greene, CPA, Binghamton. This award is given to a graduating senior who has excelled in courses in auditing.
The National Contract Management Association Award: Awarded to a School of Management junior and/or first-year MBA or MS in accounting graduate student who demonstrates academic excellence and the ability to realize his/her career goals. Special consideration is given to applicants who indicate a desire to pursue careers in some aspect of federal contract administration.
Philip M. Piaker Award for Commitment to Excellence: Established to honor graduating seniors who, through leadership efforts in promoting the ideals of service and ethical standards in the profession of accounting, best exemplify the qualities demonstrated by Professor Piaker.
Sales and Marketing Executives Leadership Award: Presented to an undergraduate or graduate student who has demonstrated leadership in the marketing community.
Mitchell Titus and Company Scholarship Award for Excellence in Accounting: Awarded to a junior minority student who is pursuing the study of accounting.
American Society of Mechanical Engineers Student Section Award: Given for high academic achievement and service to ASME. Awarded to an outstanding graduating senior.
Award for Academic Excellence: Given to an outstanding graduating senior.
Hakuto/Universal Prize: Awarded to an undergraduate engineering student who has demonstrated superior academic performance and has given evidence of interest in fostering international business cooperation.
Floyd H. Lawson Senior Prize in Engineering: Established in 1988 in honor of Floyd H. Lawson, awarded to two first-semester seniors, one in electrical engineering and one in mechanical engineering.
Society of Manufacturing Engineers, Chapter 35 Award: Awarded to a first-semester junior student with interest in manufacturing.
Tau Beta Pi Honor Society Prize: Top rising juniors are invited to write a special essay and the two top essays are selected for the prize by the officers of the New York State Society of Professional Engineers.
Student Recognition Award: Recognizes and honors a student who has served Binghamton as an outstanding volunteer.
