FIELD HOCKEY

Field Hockey - Competitive
The Field Hockey Club is a competitive team open to all students. The team is generally comprised of approximately 25-30 players, but is always looking for new members to join. The club is led by current students who are voted into executive board positions as well as captains- a volunteer coach with collegiate field hockey experience also works with the club.  During the fall season, games are played against other clubs from colleges/universities, we are a memeber of the  New York State Club Field Hockey League.  In the fall of 2008, the club also gained mebership in the National Field Hockey League which will have us traveling to games and tournaments beyond NY. In total, 10-12 games are played during the fall season, excluding playoffs.   In the spring, the team will schedule indoor turf tournaments, this includes Binghamton's own "Bearcat Bowl".  There are both indoor and outdoor practices, experienced and inexperienced players are encouraged to join. The club is excited and looking forward to a new year and the opportunity to play field hockey!

Saturday 9/19 All Day Tournament @ St. Joe's (PA) vs. St. Joe's, Rowan University

The Bearcats field hockey team came out big with their opening game against St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia. After a long 3 hour drive, the team came out aggressively in the first half controlling the game. At the end of the half, neither team had scored. The Bearcats started the second half strong and scored within the first 10 minutes. The shot was assisted by junior Jane Donatich and tipped in by freshmen Colleen Callahan. St. Joe's team was visibly tired and the Bearcats had no problem holding them off until the final whistle was blown making the final score 1-0.

The Bearcats then went on to play a second game in Philadelphia against Rowan University. Although they were tired, the team fought hard and came up with a tie of 1 to 1. Rowan scored first, within the beginning 5 minutes of the second half, on a corner. The bearcats then picked up the intensity and had a break away towards Rowan's goalie.  Freshmen, Colleen Callahan came up big with an amazing unassisted aerial shot in the upper left hand corner of the goal. The team fought hard for another goal but was unable to put one in leaving the game tied. The bearcats will face Rowan University again on October 18th and are looking forward to showing them what B.U. field hockey is all about.

On Halloween, the BU Club field hockey team ventured to Philadephia to play 2 games at Philadelphia University. With a forecast of sunny weather and a high of 70, it looked as if it would be a great day for field hockey, but that was not the case. It rained throughout both games making the field muddy and tough to play on. The first game against Philadelphia University started off slow, but soon picked up once BU junior forward Jane Donatich scored the first goal off an assist by freshman forward Stephanie Smith. Another goal was quickly scored by Smith, assisted by sophomore forward Colleen Callahan.

Junior Amy Beresheim played an amazing game in goal. Going into the second half feeling confident, BU scored another 2 goals to end the game at 4-0. Callahan tapped in the first off of an assist by Donatich in a corner and Smith scored the last assisted by Donatich.

Feeling tired and wet, BU got pumped up for their second game against Drexel. The game started off well, but Drexel put in the first goal.

Another goal from Drexel was scored within the next 5 minutes. BU kept up with Drexel and did not let down, despite Drexel's extremely physical play and poor sportsmanship. Senior defender Stacey Bohlert played great defense showing Drexel what BU is all about. Callahan kept BU in the game by scoring a goal in the middle of the second half. However, Drexel quickly put in another 2 goals making the final score 1-4. It was a disappointing loss. The team thanks their dedicated seniors for contributing so much this season and throughout their field hockey careers at BU. They will truly be missed on and off the field!

As a result BU finished the season 4-3-1 and unfortunately did not qualify for Nationals. However, overall BU had a great seaon and is looking forward to tournaments in the spring including their very own "Bearcat Bowl" and the National League Spring Tournament.
