Saturday 10/10 Binghamton University
On Oct 10th, the Table Tennis Club at Binghamton University hosted its first open tournament, inviting players from outside of the university to compete with our team members. The invited teams include a team from SUNY Cortland, two teams from Binghamton local clubs, and a team from Vestal High School. Binghamton University formed two teams for this event.

The team’s standing in the rounds of random pick was used to decide the winner of the 1st place team award. The Binghamton Local B team, led by How Lin, had the lead in the beginning, winning 9 out of the 10 matches the team played. The BU A team then began to coach each other’s games which significantly improved the team’s performance. Before long, the BU A team surpassed Binghamton Local B team and secured its lead.  The BU A team proudly won the team award!

6 players were undefeated in the random pick round, including Li He, Zewei Quan, and John Slaven from the BU A team, How Lin from Binghamton Local B team, Mirek Goljan from Binghamton Local A team, and Sho Arai from SUNY Cortland. Individuals with either perfect wins or winning 4 out of 5 matches proceed to a double eliminations round. A total of 10 players out of the 30 participants advanced to the double eliminations round, and of those who advanced, each had the potency to try for the title.

Then on, each game was well-matched and exciting and the crowd was constantly engaged . After the fierce battles, Li He and Jed Bernstein from the BU A team, Sho Arai from SUNY Cortland and Wei Fu from Binghamton Local B team stepped into the semifinals. Jed was the first to earn the token to the finals; his steady, yet strong loops left no chance for his opponents. Li’s path was not as smooth; he lost the maximum amount of games that he can afford before being eliminated, and then pulled himself together for the ultimate comeback, winning the last token to the finals. Jed eventually won in the showdown against Li and won the coveted 1st BU Open Table Tennis Tournament title.

Thanks to the support of Club Sports, the tournament was a great success. The BU A team secured all of the titles and received momentous recognition in the table tennis world at Binghamton. The event raised $200 for the club and will help maintain the healthy growth of the sport in the university. Hopefully, the BU team will receive the same magnitude of success in their upcoming National Collegiate Table Tennis Association tournament and other tournaments in the future.

Sunday 11/8 Cornell University National Collegiate Table Tennis tournament (NCTTA)

On Sunday, November 8, 2009, the Binghamton Table Tennis Club went to Cornell to participate in the National Collegiate Table Tennis tournament (NCTTA) held once a semester.  This is the second time the Binghamton Table Tennis Club has gone to an NCTTA tournament, the first one being last year at RPI.  There were a total of 7 teams at the tournament in Cornell.  We competed against Cornell, Ithaca College, RPI, RIT, SUNY Buffalo, and SUNY Cortland.  We beat 3 teams and lost to three teams.  Four students from Binghamton University came to watch and to support the team.  We played four singles matches and one doubles match against each team we competed against, and whichever team won 3 out of the 5 matches won against that particular team.  All matches are best of 5 games.  The individual matches were played by Li He, Ye Feng, Jed Bernstein, and Josh Rosenkranz.  The doubles matches were played by Jed Bernstein and Li He.  The most exciting part of the tournament was when we played Cornell.  In the past, Cornell has been top in our division and has gone to nationals.  Jed and Li won their individual matches but Cornell won their other two individual matches, so the doubles match determined the victor between the teams.  With loud cheers coming from both team’s sidelines, Li and Jed won the first and third games, while Cornell won the second and fourth games.  In the fifth and final game, Cornell won on a technicality regarding a questionable serve.  Although Binghamton lost this match, Binghamton’s spirits were heightened because it has never come so close to beating Cornell.  There is always next semester to do so!  Everyone on the team exceeded expectations, especially Ye Feng, being that it was his first table tennis tournament.  Everyone played very well and the tournament inspired more energy in the team as a whole.  It also motivated the team to train more vigorously during future practices.  The Binghamton Table Tennis Club is grateful to be able to participate in the NCTTA and to be competitive with other colleges.  The club expects future success in upcoming tournaments, both home and away.
