Nature Preserve Hike

Friday, September 4, 1:30-5pm
Free - BU Nature Preserve

So you haven't ventured across the boardwalk yet? Come hike in your campus Nature Preserve and discover why it is so special. We'll loop around and head for the top, where an open meadow will provide us with a splendid vista of the local valley. Bring a day pack and a water bottle. Sturdy hiking shoes are highly recommended.

Giant Trees Day Hike

Friday, September 11, 1:30-5pm
$5 - Salt Springs State Park, PA

In neighboring Pennsylvania is a unique state park! Three waterfalls and pioneer tales shroud this stand of virgin eastern hemlocks. Come hike along the water and beneath these magnificent trees! Wear shoes that can wet, bring a water bottle and snacks.

Riding in Traffic

Saturday, September 12, 9am-noon
$5 w/ BOP bike, $3 w/ your bike - East Gym Classroom 08

You want to ride your bicycle to school, work and around town but need a few tips to boost your confidence? This workshop is designed to give you the basics of preparing for your ride in varying weather conditions, inspiration to get started, pointers on basic road safety and bicycle handling skills. We'll pedal the side streets and show you the routes that will help you with your commute to school! Test ride a BOP commuter bike or learn to pump up a tire or change a flat. Local maps will be available. Bagels and OJ are provided at 9am.

Rafting the Black River

Saturday, September 12, 9am-7pm
$90 (includes a $30 non-refundable deposit. No refunds after 4:30 p.m. 9/9/09)

This trip through the Black River gorge on Class 3 and 4 rapids is guaranteed to be a thriller! A short break on the river includes a snack and then a Bar-B-Q will greet you at the end of the river trip. Bus transportation takes you from the front of the East Gym to Watertown and back. All necessary gear is provided (wet suits) if necessary. Bring your enthusiasm and a friend for a fun river run. Limit is 52.

Lucifer Falls Day Hike

Sunday, September 13, 10am-5pm
$10 - Treman State Park

Explore one of the many spectacular gorges of central New York on a late summer afternoon! This 7 mile hike takes you past beautiful cascades, towering cliffs and along the awesome Lucifer Falls in Treman State Park. This is a moderate hike. Bring plenty of water, lunch, snacks, and a camera. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots.

Star Gazing Camp-Out

Friday, September 18, 7pm through Saturday, September 19, 10am (Rosh Hashana Break)
$35 includes tents, transportation & Saturday morning breakfast

The Kopernik Observatory & Science Center will host BOP for an overnight astronomy workshop and camp-out. If clear, participants will see all the planets in one night. Spend an entire evening learning how to navigate the night sky. We’ll learn to properly handle a telescope, read a star map, identify constellations, and much more! Viewing though Kopernik’s powerful telescopes all night long (weather permitting). (Rain/cloudy date: Sat., Sept. 19-Sun., Sept. 20)

Riverbank Clean-Up Service Project

FREE - Susquehanna River

Outdoor Pursuits will participate in the 24th annual Riverbank Clean-up sponsored by the Broome County Environmental Management Council. This clean up coincides with the National Coastal Clean-Up Day sponsored by the American Littoral Society and the Ocean Conservancy. Come out and get involved! Transportation and BOP T-shirt provided.

Finger Lakes Trail Hike

Sunday, September 20, 10am-6pm
$10

Lace up your hiking boots for a moderate 6-8 mile hike on the Finger Lakes trail. Rolling hills, vistas and a few stream crossings make for a great day in the woods! Pack a hearty lunch, trail snacks and plenty of water. Essential clothing for the weather is a must (rain coat and synthetic jacket).

Adirondack Kayak and Camping Trip

Friday, September 25, 1pm - Monday, September 28, 5pm (Yom Kippur Break)

MANDATORY Pre-Trip Meetings: Thursday, Sept 16, 6:30-7:30pm, Friday, Sept 18, 3:30-5pm & Wednesday, Sept 23, 4:30-5:30pm

Fall is a peaceful time to visit the North Country and what better mode of travel than a touring kayak! Three nights and four days of paddling and camping on the Saranac Lakes provide participants with the opportunity to practice low-impact backcountry travel skills hone their paddling strokes and learn basic navigation. Sharing in daily camp tasks, carrying gear with a partner, and sleeping in a tent are all part of this incredible journey. Must be a proficient swimmer and be prepared for the daily rigors of backcountry living. No previous experience necessary, but willingness to "rough-it" is a must. Attendance at pre-trip meetings is essential. We will review packing lists, use the pool to practice rescues and pack before departure. Limited to 8.

Ice Caves Day Hike

Monday, September 28, 9am-6:30pm (Yom Kippur Break)
$15 includes transportation.

The ice caves are just one fascinating aspect of this hike. Spectacular vistas, waterfalls and awe inspiring landscapes. This is a day hike that has it all! Pack a lunch, plenty of water, snacks and a camera. This is a full 9 mile hike over rolling terrain. Good endurance, essential clothing for the weather and well fitting hiking shoes/boots are a must. Come well rested. This is guaranteed to be a big day.

Catherine Valley Rails-to-Trails Bicycle Ride

Monday, September 28, 9am-5pm (Yom Kippur Break)
$20 with a BOP bike; $15 with your bike - Watkins Glen

The railroads built in the 1800's throughout New York nowadays have been transformed into wonderful bicycling paths. This is a flat ride of moderate length (approximately 20 miles) and passes the cascading waters of Watkins Glen and Montour Falls. Come ride this scenic trail of the old Northern Central railway and the Chemung canal towpath under the colors of autumn. This mellow trip makes for a refreshing day away from campus. Pack a hearty lunch, snacks and a water bottle. Bring money for an ice cream stop! Helmets are a must.

Tips & Tricks Nature Photography

Tuesday, September 29, 6-9pm
$30 students; $35 non-students - East Gym classroom 08
Optional Field Session: Saturday, October 3, 7-10am
$10 – Nature Preserve

The course will begin with a review of basic photographic principles such as aperture, shutter speed, and ISO and how the interplay of these three affects exposure, motion, and depth-of-field. Using this knowledge, we will explore practical techniques for macro photography in the field. The course will end with an exploration of continuous improvement for your photography, publication, and tips for better local wildlife photos. An optional field portion, limited to 8 participants, will be offered on Saturday, October 3rd, and will focus on macro photography. Course is best suited for those with a 35mm film or digital camera system.

Bike Repair

Friday, October 2 noon-1:30pm
$10 includes an emergency tool kit; $3 without tool kit

Learn to adjust those squeaky brakes, change a tire, or deal with a derailleur. We'll give you the basics of overall troubleshooting, you bring your replacement parts along for installation assistance.

Hiking & Yoga

$5 – The Glen

Experience a revitalizing blend of yoga and hiking as you explore the natural beauty of the Glen. Take time to breathe the fresh air, tap into your mindfulness, and become open to your place in nature. Bring a water bottle and wear sturdy shoes. Transportation provided.

Wilderness First Aid Certification

Saturday, October 10 and Sunday, October 11, 9am-5pm
$125 students; $150 non-students – East Gym classroom 08

That cell phone doesn't work out here. So what are you gonna do when you can’t call 911? Valid for two years, this 16-hour certification is offered for those successfully completing this hands-on clinic. Stonehearth Opening Learning Opportunities (SOLO) instructors are wilderness EMTs with various backgrounds in adventure education, but with significant time on emergency rescue and medical teams in the White Mountains. They will use experiential scenarios to teach comprehensive patient evaluation and care, evacuation techniques and improvisation with common outdoor equipment. Now the standard in care for outdoor educators and field instructors who find themselves more than an hour from definitive medical care, this certification is designed for the backcountry traveler, outdoor group leader or camp counselor.

Cider & Doughnuts Hike

Friday, October 16, 1:30-5pm
$5 – Chenango Valley State Park

The hills are ablaze with color-get out and enjoy it. This will be an easy hike under the autumn canopy of the trees around the lakes and along the trails of our closest state park. Cider and doughnuts greet us at the return to the van!

Flashlight Corn Maze

$10 - Stoughton Farms, Newark Valley

Get a flashlight and get psyched for an evening in a corn field! This giant 8-acre maze maybe just the challenge that you need on a Friday night! No less than 80 clues along the way help you find the exit, but answer the question wrong and you may find yourself at a dead end. Cider, donuts and other goodies await those who find their way out!! Includes transportation and admission. BRING A FLASHLIGHT!

Catskills Fire Tower Hike

Saturday, October 24, 8am-7pm
$15 - Tremper Mountain

With a summit elevation of 2740 feet, the steady climb up to the Mt. Tremper fire tower on an old jeep road requires moderate effort. Along the way there are several unique features and often overlooked glimpses into Tremper’s past. From the tower the Burroughs Range is magnificent not matter what season it is! Look for the Devil’s Path further out on the horizon. Bring along a small pack with lunch, snacks, and plenty of water for the day. Sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended. Essential clothing for the weather is a must (rain wear and synthetic jacket).

Save Our Streams – Medication Take Back

FREE and open to the public!

Outdoor Pursuits in conjunction with the DEC and DOH wants to reduce the discharge of prescription drugs in the Broome County waterways. With increasing amounts of prescription drugs and personal care products being detected in U.S. rivers and groundwater, this is your opportunity to do your part too. Prescriptions that are no longer necessary or expired as well as over-the-counter medications will be collected and disposed of in an environmentally appropriate manner.

Buttermilk Falls Hike

Sunday, November 8, noon-5pm
$10 – Buttermilk Falls State Park

This is yet another chance to visit one of the gorges of Ithaca. Buttermilk Falls cascading stream, cold water pools and interesting rock formations are features not to be missed. This is an easy to moderate hike linking trails for what promises to be a stress relieving adventure.

22 Water Falls Day Hike

Sunday, November 15, 9am-6:30pm
$10 - Ricketts Glen State Park

This is a moderately strenuous hike of 7.5 miles along a broad bottom canyon, past 22 named waterfalls, up rock staircases and through a boulder tunnel. How cool is that?? Get up early on a Sunday morning to find out! Bring along a small pack with lunch, snacks, and plenty of water for the day. Sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended. Essential clothing for the weather is a must (hat, gloves, rain gear and synthetic jacket). Space is limited.

Adirondack Snowshoeing & XC skiing trip

Friday, January 15-Wednesday, January 20, 2010
MANDATORY MEETING: Friday, December 4, 3:30-5pm East Gym rm. 08
$425 includes 5-nights lodging, transportation, most meals and equipment.

Explore the serenity of the winter environment from the heart of the Adirondack High Peaks! Snowshoeing allows you to experience a snow covered backcountry while heading to incredible destinations only found with some invigorating heart healthy effort. Come prepared to learn about winter travel and safety, climb some mountains or find a frozen lake. Regardless if we are headed up high or staying low, we’ll chose a scenic route each day depending on the energy of the group and the weather conditions. Must be in good physical condition. Full itinerary, clothing list and menu to be discussed at the mandatory pre-trip meeting.
