Job shadowing is a short-term experience that provides a close, detailed look at a future career. Shadowing a professional in the workplace is one of the best ways to learn what a job is really like--from the inside. It can help you in the career decision-making process by giving you a first-hand look at an occupation and determine if the career is the right fit for you.
Liberal Arts to Careers Externship Program for Harpur Students
The Liberal Arts to Careers Externship program provides students in Harpur College an opportunity to shadow Harpur alumni in the workplace. Selected students are matched with a professional for a shadowing experience at the sponsor’s workplace. Students are matched with sponsors based on interests and availability, as well as geographic locations. Preference is given to sophomores. More information about the program including how to apply is available at www.binghamton.edu/lace. The deadline to apply for a summer externship is Friday, March 9.
Setting-up Your Own Job Shadowing Experience
You could job shadow anyone in a career of interest to you. Depending on who you know, you might want to start with a relative, friend of a parent, or one of your friends' parents who works in an occupation you'd like to learn more about. You might also utilize the Alumni Career Network to identify Binghamton alumni who are willing to assist you in attaining your career goals. Whomever you hope to shadow, explain to the individual that you are interested in learning more about his/her occupation and would like to spend a day with him/her at work to get a feel for the tasks and atmosphere of the job. Your goal is to get a sense of a typical day in the field and determine whether or not you could see yourself in a similar role.
Job shadowing, besides helping you evaluate your choice of an academic major and career preference, also encourages you to hone your networking skills and meet with alumni.
Mock Interview Program Available through the CDC
For students who want to improve their interviewing skills, the Career Development Center is offering a mock interview program. A practice mock interview is one of the very best ways to prepare for an actual employment interview by helping you to learn what is expected and how you can improve the way you present yourself.
Have you considered working for the Federal Government? The good news is the federal government is hiring! There are more than 200 federal agencies from NASA to the U.S. Post office, and positions are available in fields from business to architecture, or even art and design. To learn more about internship and employment opportunities in the Federal Government, participate in the following webinars being hosted by the Partnership for Public Service and offered through the Career Development Center:

Texas Instruments is looking to hire Packaging Engineers for full-time and internship positions. In this role packaging engineers partner with businesses to design and develop state-of-the-art in high-density, 3D advanced semiconductor packaging technologies, resolve packaging issues, and document packaging requirements. TI packaging engineers participate in cross-functional teams, supporting product qualification and production, helping to meet reliability and yield requirements, design testability, and test coverage.
