JDRF was begun in 1970 by parents of children with diabetes. They understood that managing type 1 diabetes was not the answer. Insulin was not a cure. Type 1 diabetes strikes adults and children suddenly and makes them insulin dependent for life. Nearly 24 million Americans suffer from type 1 diabetes, the most severe form of the disease - as well as the 246 million worldwide; a number the World Health Organization anticipates will more than double by 2030.
