In addition to the required practicum, students may also work directly with an individual faculty member in an internship experience, which is a learning experience that allows a student to integrate academic learning in the University with "real world" activities within a given career path. The objectives set by interns will involve, in a broad sense, the application of academic theories and concepts to their work experience and a critical analysis of their findings. Since internships are not requirements for graduation, there is no pre-structured program. Students interested in exploring internships should begin with the internship library found in the Peer Advising Office, UDC-413. The library and internship binders house a variety of information about possible sites for undergraduate students.
The student is required to design the internship and define its objectives in conjunction with a field supervisor, and submit the resulting proposal to a faculty sponsor for approval. It is up to the student to contact the faculty sponsor. This person may be your faculty adviser or another faculty member who will sponsor and grade the internship. Students completing an internship for four credits are required to work 10-12 hours per week at the internship site and complete additional assignments as required by the faculty sponsor. Internships may be taken for one to four credits.

Note that Human Development majors are restricted to a total of eight (8) credit-hours in internship and independent study courses toward their degree (courses number 395, 397, 495 and 497).
If it is your first internship, you will register for HDEV 395, and if it is your second internship, you will register for HDEV 495. You cannot register online for HDEV 395 or HDEV 495. Registration must be completed in the Department of Human Development Department Office, UDC-407. Internships are graded on a pass/fail basis only.

To apply for an internship, the student must submit a completed Internship Cover Sheet and an acceptable proposal to a faculty member with experience related to the area in which the internship will be performed. Preparation of the proposal requires thought and consideration, so planning should begin well before the registration period for the semester in which the internship will be performed.
Students should discuss the duties and responsibilities of the internship with their site supervisor and outline their duties in writing. The written outline will become part of the internship proposal which students should then submit to their faculty sponsor for approval. A student can register for an internship only after the proposal has been approved by the field supervisor and the faculty sponsor.
Note that students must obtain approval and signatures from both the site supervisor and their faculty sponsor. The signed internship cover sheet (.pdf, 21.8 kb) and a copy of the internship proposal must be returned to the department office when registering for HDEV 395/495.
Registration for internships must be done in the Department of Human Development Office, UDC-409. Students cannot register online for HDEV 395 or HDEV 495.
Undergraduate four-credit internship proposals should be filed no later than the middle of the second week of class. Undergraduate internships for less than four credits have a later add deadline. Check the department office at 607-777-2841 for exact dates. No proposals will be considered after the deadline for adding courses has passed.
A copy of the student's cover sheet and proposal will be placed in the student's academic file.
Internships are graded pass/fail and are typically three or four credits. One credit represents 45 hours of student work per semester. Those hours can include actual work on site, academic study or research and on-site or off-site preparation.
A faculty sponsor can be any full- or part-time faculty currently appointed in the Department of Human Development. He or she is responsible for serving as the on-campus coordinator and supervisor of the internship. As such, he or she must approve the internship proposal, maintain contact with the field supervisor to insure the proposal is properly implemented and submit the final grade to the Registrar's Office.
The faculty sponsor will be available for regular contact with the student during the internship, will submit a mid-semester evaluation form to assess student progress and may follow up with a phone call to the field supervisor.
The field supervisor is the person who will serve as the direct supervisor of the student during the internship. He or she is responsible for providing a mid-semester evaluation and a final evaluation on the student's activities to the faculty sponsor for use in grading the student.
