The MPA program will host "Party with a Purpose" from 7-10 p.m., Friday, March 14, at Terra Cotta, 81 State St., Binghamton. This event is open to individuals who are ages 18 and above.
"Party with a Purpose" is a 100-percent student-run event established to raise awareness of the importance of civic engagement and to encourage professional and aspiring, local community leaders to be more active in their surrounding communities. An informative networking experience designed for professionals and aspiring community leaders alike, "Party with a Purpose" serves as a means to give back to the greater Binghamton area.
The concept was created by a small group of master of public administration graduates, and all funds raised from the event go to Binghamton University's Philanthropy Incubator for donation to local nonprofit organizations.
Hors d'oeuvres and pastries will be provided, along with music by Kreative Sound Entertainment. A raffle drawing for prizes will be held at 9 p.m. Tickets are $40 per person and will be available for sale from noon-5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, in the lobby of the Downtown Center. An MPA is a marketable professional degree that prepares students for management careers in public and nonprofit organizations. It is ideal for students who are committed to public service, would like to be leaders in public and nonprofit organizations, and want to make a positive difference in the world.
The MPA program at Binghamton University's College of Community and Public Affairs collaborates with community-based organizations to prepare today's students to be tomorrow's leaders, innovators, and public service managers. MPA graduates are equipped with practical, real-world experiences, and the theoretical framework needed to tackle today's toughest societal issues. Our faculty, staff, graduates, students and interns make important contributions to the communities in which they live and work, and to the broader public service profession. You can, too. The centerpiece of our academic programs is our NASPAA-accredited MPA program. The flexibility of our MPA curriculum enables students to pursue a variety of interests and tailor their programs of study to fit their needs. You can learn more about the MPA degree here, along with opportunities to combine the MPA with an accredited master's degree in student affairs, social work or nursing. If you are a current undergraduate student at Binghamton University, you can also find out how to fast track your study by pairing an undergraduate degree in political science, theater, Asian and Asian American Studies, Spanish, French, Italian, politics, philosophy and law, Judaic studies or environmental studies with the MPA. Not interested in the full MPA degree? Consider pursuing a graduate certificate in nonprofit administration and local government management .
As part of the course, students receive an overview of philanthropy, nonprofit organizations and their role in civic life. They also explore their personal values, identify the issues about which they care most and learn about community needs. All of this knowledge informs their grantmaking decisions. As a result of this process, students make grants to local organizations generally averaging between $2,000-$5,000. Students will make their decisions regarding which organizations to support in two phases. The first phase of the process is to generate background information about local organizations. Students will use that background information to identify between four and eight finalist organizations about which they would like to learn more. The students then visit the finalist organizations and representatives of those organizations will come to class on April 1 or 8 between 1:15-4:15. The students will select finalists in late March and make grant decisions by April 29th. We will have an awards ceremony on May 6.
To be eligible for a grant award, organizations must be a 501(c) 3 organization operating in South Central New York (generally, but not exclusively, Broome County). If you would like the students to consider your organization for a grant, please complete the online information form.
The students have designed the form to be simple, so we hope it does not take too much of your time. We encourage applicants to complete the information form early to facilitate our process; however we will treat all applicants who submit the form on time equally.
Please complete the form electronically. The deadline for completing the form is Saturday, March 15th at midnight. We know a Saturday deadline is unusual; however we scheduled that day to accommodate potential applicants who we will meet at the end of the previous week and to make sure students have enough time to review applications before they begin their decision-making process the next week.We will not review applications submitted after March 15.
