Student Initiatives
Student volunteers contribute hundreds of thousands of hours to the local community annually − a $5.9 million value − through volunteerism, internships, clinical-practice experiences and service-learning projects at area businesses, charitable organizations and government offices.
At the Decker School of Nursing, the 120,000 hours that students spend in 400 clinical settings contribute not only to their own education, but also to the well-being of others.
Catalysts for Intellectual Capital 2020 (CIC2020), a student-run think tank, enhances the region’s strengths by encouraging recent graduates to seek work in Greater Binghamton. With support from area business leaders and the University, CIC2020 offers its own leadership institute for students each spring.
The Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) works with communities within and beyond Binghamton University's campus to provide various rewarding and meaningful opportunities to students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members. The CCE supports the attainment of academic, personal and professional growth through civic engagement to develop active and engaged citizens. Recent CCE projects include:
- Bridging the Digital Divide Project (BDDP), a collaborative effort between Binghamton University, Broome Community College and 12 community partners, works to increase access to and training in information technology for local populations of youth living in poverty, the unemployed and under-employed, immigrants and refugees, and the elderly. BDDP provided approximately 1,160 people with computer literacy training and 15 agency clientele with experience refurbishing computers. It also received $23,600 and 7,000 lbs. worth of computer equipment donations and involved a total of 50 Binghamton University and BCC students.
- Coordination of flood relief efforts including the development of a two-credit Flood Recovery Service Learning Course in fall 2011 that resulted in the contribution of 2,000 hours of community service. In addition, 20 resource drives have been coordinated, almost 300 student volunteers have cleaned out flooded homes, and approximately 10,000 hours of flood relief efforts have been delivered to date by University faculty, staff and students (some of these are ongoing).
- Receipt of a grant to hire a VISTA volunteer to build a relationship between the Hinman residential community on campus and at-risk city youth to help them address community problems.
- Holding fundraisers for many nonprofits (American Cancer Society, CHOW, Southern Tier Independence Center, American Civic Association, etc.)
- Helping students compete in the Newman’s Own Foundation to win cash prizes for programs at local nonprofits ($6,000 for Room to Heal in 2010, $15,000 for Boys and Girls Club in 2011 and $15,000 for VINES-urban gardening in 2012)
Binghamton University was named to the 2012 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for being an institution that reflects the values of exemplary community service and achieves meaningful outcomes in our community. “Selection to the Honor Roll is recognition from the highest levels of the federal government of an institution's commitment to service and civic engagement on the campus and in our nation.”
More than 100 student teams participated in the 2012 campus Relay for Life, which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to support cancer research since its inception on campus.
Coaches and student-athletes annually visit dozens of area schools to deliver messages on anti-bullying, nutrition, exercise, teamwork, drugs and alcohol. They also provide free skills-building clinics to community youth groups, perform hundreds of hours of community service and raise thousands of dollars for non-profit organizations. In 2012, student-athletes raised $13,000+ for St. Baldrick's to benefit pediatric cancer research, as well as collected more than 1,000 pairs of shoes through Soles4Souls.
The Johnson City Mentor Program, a partnership between Binghamton University and the Johnson City School District, provides middle school students with role models and extra academic support. Since its inception in spring 1997, over 1,000 Binghamton University students have successfully participated in the program.
Harpur’s Ferry, the student-run ambulance service and recipient in 2005 and 2011 of the National Collegiate Emergency Medical Services Agency of the Year award, offers advanced life-support capabilities to its patients. It serves the campus and surrounding communities through mutual aid response.
The departments of Music and Theatre offer more than 100 performances each academic year that the community is invited to attend.
Our Career Development Center placed 566 students in for-credit internships this academic year, exclusive of the internship activity reported through individual academic units.
