Ending violence - one Green Dot at a time!
What's up with all of the Green Dots?
A STRATEGY!
Green Dot is a Power-Based Personal Violence prevention campaign being launched here at Binghamton.
What is Power-Based Personal Violence (PBPV)?
"... a form of violence that has as a primary motivator the assertion of power, control and/or intimidation in order to harm another. This includes partner violence, sexual assault, stalking, and other uses of force, threat, intimidation, or harassment of an individual. It also includes the use of alcohol or drugs to commit any of these acts. These acts are inclusive of acts committed by strangers, friends, acquaintances, intimates, or other persons." (Source: Ending Violence...One Green Dot at a Time, Dorothy J. Edwards, PhD)
This comprehensive approach to violence prevention capitalizes on the power of peer, colleague and cultural influence. Together, we can change the culture on Binghamton's campus and encourage others to help descalate violent or potentially violent situations wherever they happen.
The Green Dot team is a group of Binghamton University faculty, staff and students utilizing the power of peer and cultural influence for violence prevention. Informed by social change theory, the model targets community members as potential bystanders and seeks to engage them, through awareness, education and skills-practice, in proactive behaviors that establish intolerance of violence as the norm, as well as reactive interventions in high-risk situations resulting in the ultimate reduction of violence wherever they are.
