Broken heart syndrome study
So heartbroken you actually feel pain in your heart? Well, a recent study published in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, proves that heartache can actually cause a heart attack. "Broken Heart Syndrome is a syndrome that occurs under severe emotional or physical stress,” said
Pamela Stewart Fahs, RN, DSN, BU Professor of Nursing. “It was originally discovered in Japan. But we've found that two percent in cardiac deaths that occur, we see this sudden emotional or physical trauma." . . .

The Unfiltered Truth: Nurse crafts
a smoking-cessation message for pregnant women
Geraldine Britton, assistant professor of nursing, hopes that showing pregnant women a new video will lead them to quit smoking or cut down on cigarettes. Hoping to devise better smoking-cessation strategies, Britton and her colleagues in ITURP, supported by a March of Dimes grant, conducted a series of nine focus groups. Three of those groups consisted of pregnant smokers and six of healthcare providers. "The purpose was to increase the understanding of the pregnant smoker, including the motivation to quit," Britton says. The researchers also asked for ideas about how to communicate the message. . . .

The Decker School of Nursing three years ago established its graduate-level Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program.
In May 2011, the program graduated its first two students. In addition, three other students received post-master’s certification as psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners. Following professional certification, all will be qualified to assess, diagnose and treat patients with mental illness.

Nicole Rouhana, PhD '11 and son Ziyad will both receive degrees at the Graduate School ceremony. Nicole is getting a doctorate in rural nursing; Ziyad is getting a master's in engineering.

Four students to deliver Commencement addresses

Nicole Rouhana, receiving her PhD in Rural Health from Binghamton University's Decker School of Nursing, will speak at the Graduate Schools ceremony at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sharif Khalil will speak at the 8:30 a.m. Sunday Harpur College ceremony, Yann Ilboudo will speak at the professional schools ceremony at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, and Nathan Satin will speak at the 3:30 p.m. Sunday Harpur College ceremony.

Decker School professor and students travel to Dominican Republic on nursing mission
Professor Laura Terriquez- Kasey travels annually to the Dominican Republic taking nursing students along to enlighten them regarding health care systems and practices outside of the United States, as well as to expose students to community health nursing that serves local people living in extreme poverty. The nursing mission team provides desperately needed basic health care and medical supplies to those for whom no other means is available. Visiting Nurse Service Honors Decker School Alums
Decker School of Nursing alumni Yvan Fortunat '08 and Diana Motti '09 were among eighteen honored in September by the Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY) for completing a nine-month home health care nursing internship designed especially for new nurse graduates. Read more.
Memory Clinic Opens on Campus
Binghamton University is helping to reach out to elder community members and their families, thanks to the recent opening of the Memory Clinic on campus. The clinic, coordinated through the Decker School of Nursing’s Elder Services Center, offers geriatric assessments, consultations and case management services for local residents. The clinic is located in Room 337 of the Academic B building and operates every other Thursday evening. Read more.

Decker professors with interdisciplinary team receive faculty development project funding to continue tobacco use research
DSON Professors Geraldine Britton and Gary James, along with Sean McKitrick and Steven Lynn, received $43,575 to continue Binghamton's Interdisciplinary Tobacco Research Use Program (ITURP) from the University's recently launched Academic Program and Faculty Development Fund. Decker Clinical Faculty Joyce Rhodes-Keefe and Lori Sprague have also been involved in the project. PhD students Rosemary Collier and Tina Abbate were contributing writers on the grant proposal. Collier and FNP Grad Student, Taffae Cadeau, have worked with ITURP since junior undergrad nursing students. . . .

DSON junior student, Deirdre Brennan '11, member of increasingly popular traditional Irish band Girsa--
(Gaelic for "young girls") produced and released their first CD this past spring. It is making quite a splash on the Irish Tradition Music scene here in the US and also back in Ireland. Girsa recently played for the Consul General of Ireland and The National Park Service invited them to Ellis Island for the 4th of July. . . Read more.
