Freshman Year at a Glance

adreinaAs a typical second semester senior in high school, I was looking forward to finally understanding what the big deal about COLLEGE was! Accepted as an EOP student at Binghamton University, I was mandated to attend a one-month pre-freshmen curriculum called Binghamton Enrichment Program, BEP.

I received the great benefits of meeting a close-knit group of EOP staff and faculty members who really care about my independent growth and success as a Person of Color. The boost of confidence that I experienced in just that one-month span allowed me to succeed in my freshman year of college for the 2006-2007 school year. In my freshman year, I succeeded academically and accomplished my academic goals including making it on the Deans List as well as the Director’s List. I was also involved with the Binghamton Enrichment Newsletter and I even started my own club, V.O.I.C.E! I was truly content with where I ended up that I did not make time for hangouts with my friends, whether it was to a movie or to a party.  I realized that the social and academic life must co-exist with one another in order to enjoy all angles of the college experience.

To the incoming freshman, I leave you with this: Do not let the college you attend dictate you in a way that you might feel restricted, but rather make the most of your four or five years. Most importantly, what I see in my first year at a glance is the need to find a healthy social and academic balance that works. Peer pressure may tempt you to do something you may not want and it might bend your routine, but trust yourself to know what is important to you and stick with your own personal values—because your values are the backbone to your success story.

Joshua’s Sonnet

As I walk down these hallways
I feel as if I shouldn’t be
That my work ethic just won’t cut
And that what I think will happen won’t
How does one conquer these odds?
One see no reason to give up
But still cannot see a reason to move on
Maybe one should just let life unfold
Find out one’s destiny
Maybe he’ll be successful without hard work….I wake up!

The Pre-Decker Experience

I came into Binghamton University through the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP).  I was automatically placed in the Harpur School of Arts and Sciences.

During the career track classes taught in BEP 2006, I was informed of the small percentage of students that are admitted into Decker annually. Hearing about the immense competition and few spots available in the program definitely brought some uncertainty about my future in Binghamton.   I filled out an intra-university application for Decker.  Despite my grades and eagerness as a freshman to apply, I was denied acceptance into the school.  I worked very hard my spring semester freshman year and even took summer courses so that I would be able to finish all of my pre-requisites on time. I also joined the Mary E. Mahoney Nursing Support group, which helped me to see that others were in the same position that I was.  After applying a second time my freshman year I was accepted into Decker.  Getting into Decker was an immense accomplishment, one that relieved a big burden from my shoulders and somehow made the future clearer for me.

Do not fall victim to peers, advisors, or professors that tell you that you cannot achieve something; prove them wrong and succeed at the same time.

If I could Sing

If I could sing my voice would resonate from the highest building.
Sing so smoothly, my voice would be the lullaby that makes the innocent slumber.
Sleeping tight, my voice would digress to low tones so as to leave the day and introduce to the night with a warm embrace.
But as the night has been welcomed, that is when I will go off into the night looking and searching.
It is not hard to find the object of my desire, because in my heart I know where HE is.
Once I have found him, my heart is overjoyed.

ashleyA wise person told me once that if you write down all your goals and ideas, and strategize you will be ahead of the rest!

My goal is to become an entrepreneur and I knew that my first step to this goal was transferring to the school of Management. Before anything I did my research on SOM and the requirements necessary for acceptance. After my first semester I decided to push myself, once the semester was over I received my grade point average and thought “what can I lose?” I filled out an application and just waited. After months of waiting I received a letter from SOM admissions office stating that they were not able to make a decision and was awaiting my spring semester grades. I figured that they wanted to make sure I was constant with my grades. This made me work even harder. By the end of the school year I was on the dean’s list again and the hard work had paid off, but still no word from SOM. Around July I finally received a letter and I could not believe my eyes, I was thrilled to know I made it. Finally I was in SOM and I was going to concentrate on just my major and everything I wanted to achieve.

The best advice I can give future students who are trying to get in, is to keep in mind that the competition is tough and you have to try to beat out the rest.

Some mistakes that I made were that I almost didn’t apply because I doubted my abilities. Remember never ever doubt yourself; do not let anyone tell you it is not possible. When you procrastinate you should look at the goals you wrote down, believe me the satisfaction is well worth it. So go right now and apply or start planning, do not waste time for it is

Raw uncut, Writers Domain, world of struggle

Were we created from Gods love or wrath, either way we have strayed from the path…

BY: Magnus Daniel Menar

Many of us walking around do so all nervous,
Constantly wondering ... “What’s life’s purpose.”
Becoming lost in our thirst, the attempt to seek answers only make the matter worse.
When we all seek to be different only revealing we are the same.
It is only when we realize that we are the same, can we be different.
And so I ask “were we created from God’s love or wrath, or his love of wrath,
Either way we have strayed from the path...
Oddly enough, we continue to bluff like “all is well”.  Something only time can tell.
For truth is invincible, if only what we saw wasn't invisible.
If you can articulate thoughts to words, you should be moved to be a writer.
Paper and pen your weapons, touching lives, you have proved to be a fighter.
The spilling of ink is the therapeutic release of trouble.
For the pen is always mightier than the sword, analogy... cow skin whip or musical cord.
Fearless... for who can battle thee. Say it loud, say it proud...I’M A WRITER!
Heart of a generic fighter.
As words form on paper via ink, the you that cant speak, can hear you think.
I’m no lyricist, but if my life were a musical sheet, my act of words would be the notes.
And so again I ask, were we created from God’s love or wrath, or his love of wrath.
Either way, either day, we have strayed from the path.
If done out of wrath, i seek to prove God wrong.
Because my life is filled with the mixture of notes, I seek to make a song.
All so I can prove the fat lady that can sing, wrong.
That...
“Anything real cannot be threatened, anything fake does not exist”
Writers anthem, embodiment of persist. - I prove to be raw.  If you cannot see your own notes, prove me wrong.

100 Words Per-verse

A siren wails,
anger and depression come in waves,
but I’m told my better self must prevail.
In the distance
I hear words too profanae for my taste,
coming from shielded speakers
while heads bob to the thumping…
bass, for the youth today it’s all the rage
echoing off the brick wall
then bouncing off a metal cage.
Between sixth and seventh street,
that’s where you’ll find me,
underneath the dreary sky,
and on these weary feet.
Between sixth and seventh street,
that’s where you’ll find me,
where ‘shooting stars’
have become so common
that no one bothers to speak.

Life as an OA

This past summer I became a part of an experience, I became an Orientation Advisor (OA). Being an OA was not only a job but a networking and growing opportunity. Being shy as I was, I would often stutter and shy-away when presenting in front of a class, being an OA I overcame this setback by speaking the many opportunities and resources the University has. One of the many perks of having a job as an OA was dining with President Lois B. DeFleur. As OAs we had the opportunity to cook for her and sit down and chat with her, she was a truly amazing character. Being part of this experience (as I like to call it) has helped me grow and go out there and take the world by storm. I encourage all of you out there to challenge yourselves and apply for the position; you might meet some great friends and coworkers that will have a lasting impact on you.

A Riddle I made Up

I make it 2 words.
The language makes it one word.
I say the 1st word, if u say it also u might already be doing the 1st word.
The first word is a common name given to something that mocks. The 1st word is a noun.
The 2nd word deals with my grandfather. However, my grandfather could of told me stories about the 1st word. Or even buy me the 1st word. The 2nd word is a noun also. An example of the 2nd word would be the sounds my grandfather makes when he is moving his hands
We combine the 2 words, we get something like a democracy or communism, either way, the combination equals deceit and truth.
Once you make the combination you must take out letters and add letters, to formally write the way it is sounded. However, if the 1st word told you the word, you would probably spell the way it said it, with the chance of incorrectly writing it.
Another hint for the 1st word is that its associated with people of a long time period but cartoon shows them as good and bad, if you really want 2 know it is, the 1st word is something from the tropics.

Breakfast, Mayor Matt Ryan @ Binghamton City Hall: A gratifying experience

By Andreina Idalia Rosa

matt ryan

The women’s meeting allows young women to express their opinions on all sorts of issues.  The meeting takes place weekly on Tuesdays at 7:15 a.m. lasting about an hour and it is organized by Joanna Cardona.

8:30 a.m. is pretty early for a first period class, let alone to get up to meet Mayor Matt Ryan at 6:50 a.m. in front of the New Union.  This did not make the morning any easier.  I was more than grateful to have woken up and glad that I go to meet Binghamton’s Mayor.

About a month ago, I applied to intern at Fox 40 News Binghamton and I had an interview with one of the cast members.  One of the questions that was asked of me was: who is the Mayor of Binghamton? Taken aback, I was completely clueless as to who the mayor was.  As a resident in New York City, I could only think about Mayor Bloomberg and local news events that directly impacted me.  Granted, I attend school in the Binghamton area, and as a student, it should be my priority to be informed of how my life is molded politically; however, I knew that the discomfort and empty feeling I encountered once I left the interview suggested the creation of a new agenda for myself.  I call this agenda, knowledge + proactive = power.

In order to meet my agenda, I knew that attending the meeting to meet Mayor Matt Ryan will enable me to place myself in a position where I will know what is going on in my home away from home, Binghamton.

I was surprised to see that a bunch of students and EOP faculty staff members, including Joanna Cardona and James Pogue, not only woke up early and dressed in appropriate business attire, but showed devotion and eagerness to meet the Mayor and to visit Binghamton’s City Hall.  We sat in, what I believe, was the main conference room and discussed some prevalent issues.  Current concerns of Binghamton’s economic infrastructure to the disconnection between Binghamton University students and local town residents were discussed. I could not help but see how engrossed my peer-mates were.  In addition, even though we were pressed for time, I wanted to learn more of the pressing issues that I initially perceived as irrelevant to my own student career at the university.  The breakfast with Mayor Matt Ryan sparked some possible interests in politics for me in terms of getting involved in my community.  I decided to register for a political science course for spring of 2008; I am most definitely looking forward to what I anticipate to be both a rewarding and rigorous course experience.
My new agenda, knowledge + proactive = power, speaks to taking initiative, whether it is going to the weekly meetings similar to the one I attended, or taking on an internship at Binghamton’s City Hall.  I will use such power to utilize change, politically, socially, economically, personally or communally.
The famous saying of knowledge is power is partially insufficient just because it does not recognize the need to actively get involved.  I say, get involved and use the knowledge you gain to become part of an opportunity and experience bigger than yourself.
