Formatting Campus Addresses

Campus addresses have a standard format, and this standard should be adhered to wherever a campus address is used (stationery, correspondence, forms, websites, etc.). Every time the correct address format is used for incoming mail to the campus, the USPS and Campus Mail Services will be able to process it quickly and efficiently.

The basic format is outlined below. Please note that the order of the address lines is important:

  1. Binghamton University’s address must include a post office box number and zip plus four. If you must also include your office’s building and room number, abbreviate it in parentheses immediately after your office’s name:

Example: Office of Creative Services (AD-112)
    Binghamton University
PO Box 6000 [Note, no periods in PO]
    Binghamton, NY, 13902-6000

  2. Items in addresses should be listed in the following order:

    Name, Title
    College
    Office, Agency, Center
    Department
    Institution
Street or Building, Room or Suite
    City, State, Zip + Four

  3. Campus addresses should begin with the name of the office or department, or Binghamton University if there is no office or department name. In any case, the campus box number should immediately precede the city. Note the use of the zip + four, which includes the box number.

Sentence form: Questions can be sent to: Binghamton University, PO Box 6000, Binghamton, N.Y., 13902-6000.

    Stacked address:
    Binghamton University
    PO Box 6000
    Binghamton, NY, 13902-6000

  4. Use the complete mailing address when information is intended for an off-campus audience. Include area codes if listing telephone or fax numbers. Separate the area code from the telephone number using a hyphen or en dash, not parentheses. [607-777-2126 or 607–777–2126]
  5. In running text, use figures for numbered addresses (123 Main St.) and abbreviations for Ave., Blvd., and St. All similar words are spelled out, e.g., drive, road, circle, court, etc.) Include campus street addresses only for publicizing an off-campus event and for publications intended for off-campus audiences.
  6. If you’re unsure if you’re using the correct PO Box and ZIP for your department or office, please consult Campus Mail Services or the USPS.
  7. Use Postal Service state abbreviations in addresses.
  8. Campus room numbers should be referred to with the name of the building and the room number, in that order. [Library North 1202, Couper Administration Building 112]
