FROM:          Ross Geoghegan, Chair

SUBJECT:     MEETING ON DECEMBER 2

DATE:           November 26, 2003

The sixth Faculty Senate meeting of the 2003-2004 academic year will be held on Tuesday, December 2, immediately following President Lois B. DeFleur’s full faculty meeting that begins at 11:45 a.m. in UU-133.

The agenda is:

1.      Approval of minutes of November 18, 2003 meeting (attached)

2.      Announcements/Questions

3.      New Business

a)      Proposal for Evolutionary Studies Integrated Curriculum (attached)

b)      Proposed change in the General Education guidelines to use advanced placement in the sciences as General Education science-lab courses (attached).  The Faculty Senate Executive Committee recommends that the Senate approve the following proposal from the University Undergraduate Curriculum Committee:

"Under present policy, Binghamton University allows AP credit to satisfy General Education requirements in Aesthetics, Foreign Language, Humanities, Mathematics/Reasoning, and Social Science. The University Undergraduate Curriculum Committee recommends that this policy be changed so that AP credits also can satisfy the Laboratory Science ("L") requirement.  Given the AP tests currently available, the committee thinks that the "L" requirement should be satisfied by a score of 3 or better in Biology, Chemistry, or Environmental Science.

The committee further recommends that this change be made retroactive so that it applies to all students who are subject to the "new" General Education requirements."
