Literacy education for all ages

Kathryn Kear, an assistant professor in the Graduate School of Education, teaches literacy education courses and specializes in teacher decision-making, teacher reflection program implementation and professional development.

As a former K-2 teacher certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards as an early childhood generalist, Kear has spent most of her time teaching in the younger grades. But, she says, “You use the same strategies for the different ages; you just change how you teach and your materials to meet the interests of the other learners.”

Kear holds a doctorate in literary teacher education from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. She earned a master’s degree in elementary education from Lehigh University and a bachelor’s degree in visual arts from the University of Bridgeport.

New to the Binghamton faculty in 2008, Kear’s expertise also lies in primary literacy, instruction, assessment and diagnosis of K-6 readers, particularly struggling readers and English language-learners.
