Graduate Student Academic Progress Requirements
for New York State Aid

Types of New York state aid

There are two Veteran's Tuition awards administered by Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) and the New York State Education Department:

• Vietnam/Persian Gulf Veterans Full-time Tuition Award
• Vietnam/Persian Gulf Veterans Part-time Tuition Award

Eligibility

Graduate students must meet the following conditions to receive these awards:

• Meet one of the United States citizen requirements
• Meet New York state residency requirements
• Be matriculated in a degree program
• Enroll as a full-time student (except for awards designated as part-time).  Courses that do not count towards a student' s degree also do not count for determining enrollment status
• Meet the good academic standing academic progress and program pursuit requirements listed below

Academic Progress

The academic progress chart below illustrates the number of graduation credits and the minimum grade-point average students must meet to remain eligible for future state payments. Academic performance expectations are low at the beginning, but after several semesters, the expectations more closely approximate the overall minimum of 3.0 GPA necessary to qualify for a graduate degree at Binghamton University.

Graduate Program Pursuit

In addition to meeting the criteria outlined on the Academic Progress Chart, students who receive New York state awards are required by State Education Department regulations to complete a minimum number of credits toward the degree each semester as follows:

• In each semester of the first year of New York state awards, graduate students must complete 50 percent of course-work with grades of A, B, C, D, F or Pass.
• In each semester of the second year of New York state awards, graduate students must complete 75 percent of coursework with grades of A, B, C, D, F or Pass.
• In each semester of the third and fourth years of New York state awards, graduate students must complete 100 percent of coursework with grades of A, B, C, D, F or Pass.
