Dissertation Track Series

PREP Theme: Resilience

Dissertation-writing can be an intensely stressful time, and graduate students may find themselves losing track of time and losing confidence. This group helps students who are working on their dissertations learn how to cope with the general problems that may arise during their research and writing. It begins with a workshop on how to write and think about a dissertation. Students then meet regularly to discuss the dissertation-writing process, work through the obstacles that dissertation-writing may present, and offer one another support, encouragement and feedback.

Publication Track, Series 2

PREP Theme: Preparation, Professionalization

As a sequel to Series 1, this semester-long program supports students who are interested in publishing articles or book reviews in peer-reviewed journals. Having explored journals in their field during Series 1 the previous semester, students will spend this semester researching and writing an article for publication. Their objective is to produce a draft of their article to be reviewed by group members. Once students have received feedback and revised their articles, they will send the article out for publication.

Writing a Syllabus/Preparing for Your Class

PREP Theme: Planning, Professionalism

This workshop will explain how to write an effective syllabus for an undergraduate survey class, as well as how to plan material for an undergraduate class. Questions this workshop will discuss:

• How do instructors compose a syllabus in accordance with their university's procedures on plagiarism, grading, etc.?
• What should a syllabus include? What should it NOT include?
• How should instructors plan their semester?
• How much reading should an undergraduate class include?
  
  

Teaching 101/Creating and Effective Classroom

PREP Theme: Professionalism

This workshop focuses on how instructors can create an ambient, successful, and effective classroom atmosphere. Questions this workshop will discuss:

• What are some methods to keep students' attention?
• What are different techniques for resolving class difficulties?
• What are effective ways to incorporate multimedia technology in classroom?
• What are the types of assignments and tests that instructors can use to develop a better learning process?
  
  

Teaching in College/Teaching in Community College

PREP Theme: Professionalism

This workshop will look at different settings for teaching in higher education. It will address the following questions:

• What is the difference between teaching at a four-year institution and teaching at a two-year community college?
• What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
• What career opportunities do each offer?
