GRD 530X Toolbox for Researchers and Scholars

GRD 592 Graduate Community of Scholars

Instructor: Florence M. Margai

This is the required course for all Clark Fellows. To fulfill the requirements of this class, Clark fellows need to attend at least 4 workshops organized by Graduate Community of Scholars.   Beginning from Fall 2011 semester, this class will be scheduled to Friday 12:00- 2:00 pm.

GRD 593 Critical Skills for Graduate Success

This course begins with an introduction to inquiry-based project design and three days of intensive planning around a graduate-level project of significance (e.g. a dissertation proposal or chapter; a major exam). Students will then execute the projects they design, submitting drafts and receiving significant feedback from the professor.

GRD 594 Management Fundamentals for Scientists and Engineers

This course is intended to provide graduate students in science and engineering programs with basic management skills including project planning, srategic planning and management of technology development and innovation. Prerequisites: Graduate student in a science/engineering program. Course Notes: Please note that this is a "distance learning" class. GRD 595 Fundamentals of Budget and Finance for Scientists

This course is available to graduate students in science and engineering programs and it will provide an overview of business management skills by learning principles of budget and financial accounting. Students will develop an understanding of the basic financial tools needed to develop business proposals and successfully manage scientific projects in public and private work sectors. Topics may include capital planning, cost estimation, project progress measurement and other keys to developing a financially sound business. Course notes: This course can be applied to the Professional Science Management Certificate. Course Notes: Course Notes: This course will be offered online through Blackboard. Students will need to work with PowerPoint files and have speakers/headphones access on their computers. Mastery of the subject matter will be assessed

GRD 671 Instructional Design Basics

Readings and exercises lead students through process of developing a course using the principles of instructional design. Topics include: What is intelligence? How do your students learn? How does prior learning affect acquisition of new information? How will you use technology and other teaching tools? How will you assess learning? Prerequisites: graduate status, or permission of the instructor.

GRD 672 Fostering Intellectual Character

Readings and exercises lead students through process of developing a course that fosters intellectual character. Topics include: Who are today's college students? What is "smart"?, Initiating a culture of thinking, Developing thinking routines, Instructor as a model of thinking, Learning to think by talking, Faculty who make a difference. Prerequisites: graduate status, or permission of the instructor.

GRD 673 Interdisciplinary Research: Theory, Process, Ethical Decision Making 

GRD 676 The Community College

Mission of Community College, type of governance, financial structure, challenges for community college, student needs, learning styles, developing a learning environment, supplementary support for students, role of advising and related topics.
