“We have an outstanding population of undergraduate students as well as great graduate students from all over the world.”

Bahgat Sammakia, professor of mechanical engineering and director of the Center of Excellence in Small Scale Systems Integration and Packaging (S3IP), works with both undergraduate and graduate students on highly sophisticated projects that Sammakia says “make life better” — electronics systems, computer systems, smart bandages with electronic sensors that can deliver medications, thin-film solar collectors and much more.

“It’s always exciting to capture the imagination of students and to bring them to new levels in their research pursuits,” says Sammakia.

The Center of Excellence in S3IP is also key in helping Binghamton fulfill its mission to serve the region and the state by generating jobs, solving problems for corporate and industry partners both large and small, and creating new products and processes. From 1997 to 2008, the center generated more than $550 million in economic impact in the state of New York by partnering with companies like Corning, IBM, Lockheed Martin and General Electric.

“We have multiple research trusts in different areas of concentration,” explains Sammakia. “We conduct the kind of research these companies care about and train the workers they want to hire. Also, a number of small companies come here to use the infrastructure we have built and to work with our students, engineers and staff members.
