A Message From the Curator

The University Art Museum has spent more than half a century amassing a significant collection of works spanning 6,000 years of history. We also display the creations of Binghamton’s talented art students and internationally acclaimed art faculty. We reach out into neighboring communities, bringing original art into the classrooms of tomorrow’s artists.

Unfortunately, we lack the space and resources to carry out these programs in the way they deserve. The University Art Museum’s extensive Permanent Collection currently makes its home in storage, with prominent treasures on display only briefly before once again being retired to make room for other exhibits. We lack a complete catalog, making it even more difficult for students and art lovers to explore the collection. And we reach only a fraction of the students — young and old — who could benefit from exposure to the amazing works of art that are so close at hand.

At a university of Binghamton’s caliber, the Art Museum should serve as a visual library where the entire student body can explore culture and creativity. The museum should reach out to enrich lives both on campus and in the community, offering insight into diverse world cultures and an understanding of art’s vital role in society. Through generous private support, the Binghamton University Art Museum can become the campus focal point for the visual arts and a tangible representation of our reputation for excellence.
