A Message from the Dean
Binghamton University has a historic commitment to excellence in the liberal arts and sciences and produces graduates who go on to become highly accomplished leaders in many fields. The very foundation upon which Binghamton University was built, Harpur College is now the largest of the University’s six schools. Our original values and mission survive today, providing our dynamic, energetic and creative students with the opportunity to think deeply and learn broadly on their way to extraordinary lives. We remain true to the vision inscribed on the Harpur College stone in 1954: “From breadth through depth to perspective.”
Harpur College is unique among peer institutions because we offer an outstanding liberal arts education in a major research university environment. As a result, our students have the opportunity to learn from — and with — faculty members who are passionate about discovery and are nationally and internationally recognized scholars and artists.
In an educational landscape where the liberal arts often take a back seat to professional programs, we proudly offer an innovative, challenging, high-quality liberal arts education that gives students a competitive edge. For 60 years, our graduates have been the beneficiaries of our innovative, interdisciplinary approach to the liberal arts, developing the skills and habits of mind that have enabled them to achieve distinction in science, technology, business, the arts, academia, education, government, medicine and law.
Only through generous private support will Harpur College be able to build on its tradition of excellence and its recent successes to offer 21st-century students a preeminent liberal arts experience that prepares them to master the many challenges we face.
