As more and more undergraduate degrees are granted, graduate degrees are fast becoming the standard for career advancement. It is predicted that the average work-life will consist of at least four to five different careers! That means that core competency skills obtained in graduate school -- problem-solving, communication, teamwork and leadership -- are key to your professional success and the freedom to explore new career options.
A recent study by the U.S. Census Bureau shows:
Over the course of a career, these dollar differences in educational achievement are enormous. Higher education yields higher returns than almost any other investment you can make.

"As a graduate assistant for Binghamton's Semester in London program, I was fortunate to receive University support for a semester of work with the British Library's medieval manuscript collections, and the research I conducted at that time was one of the most important defining factors of my graduate career. The full semester of funding that the University provided gave me time to develop the skills needed for archival research, and I was also able to immerse myself in the manuscript collections to a far greater extent than most short-term travel grants would have allowed. Perhaps the most notable benefit of being able to work with these manuscripts was that I ceased to think of myself as just a student, and began to conceptualize my role as a future scholar.”
~Bonnie Erwin, English MA 2002
“I came to do a PhD at Binghamton because of the people. The department provided a close-knit group of grad students and faculty who made up for their small size (by some standards) by being very supportive. Small can be good when the faculty and graduate students perform internationally recognized research in various fields -- which they do at Binghamton!”
~Dr. Beren Robinson, Associate Professor, University of Guelph, Ontario, Biology PhD 1994
“When I arrived at the Watson School, I knew absolutely no one. I got to feel ‘at home’ in this school very soon. When I say ‘at home’ I am thinking about the people in this school: teachers, technical and administrative staff. To somebody else, these might sound like small things; to me, they are important and stay at the very heart of the appreciation I have for this school: support when needed, advice when asked for.”
~Cosmina Hogea, Mechanical Engineering Ph.D. 2005
