The Graduate School offers the following resources and policies to help graduate students register for courses and ensure timely degree completion.
Please note: Due to the very specific nature of graduate coursework and graduate learning sequences, course registration procedures vary from academic department to academic department. Make sure to become familiar with your academic department's registration process.
All Binghamton University students must confirm their enrollment the first week of classes every fall, spring and summer semester via BU BRAIN. If students do not fulfill this requirements by the fifth day of classes, their course registration will automatically be canceled. Instructions and details are available here. Student Records will send a reminder e-mail every semester.
It is important for all students, whether master's or doctoral, domestic or international, to register for the proper number of credits each semester, especially if full-time student status is desired or required. An improper number of credits may affect financing, tuition, visa status, satisfactory academic progress, and/or timely degree completion. Full-time registration status is defined as 12 credits per semester for level one students (who have completed less than 24 graduate credits), and 9 credits for level two students (who have completed 24 or more graduate credits). See The Graduate School Manual for details.
To receive full-time status certification, course complete master's students and ABD doctoral students must submit certain paperwork. To learn more, go here.
All graduate students must ensure continuous registration every semester. Graduate Students who fail to register each fall and spring semester for at least one credit, and who have not been granted a leave of absence, will have to reapply to The Graduate School if they wish to return as a graduate student. See The Graduate School Manual for details.
