At Binghamton, teacher education consists of numerous graduate programs.
Pre-Service Programs are for students who do not yet have any certification to teach. The master of arts in teaching (MAT) degree in adolescence education is designed for students who have an undergraduate degree in biology, chemistry, earth science, English, French, mathematics, physics, social studies, or Spanish and who seek certification to teach their subject to grades 7-12 students in New York State schools. Students who complete the degree and other requirements are eligible for initial certification.
The Graduate School of Education also offers combined (also called "accelerated") degree programs in mathematics, the sciences, and French or Spanish. These programs provide a limited number of outstanding liberal arts students the opportunity to graduate in five years with BA/BS in a subject and an MAT degree to teach that subject.
In-Service Programs (MSEd) are for students who already hold teacher certification. They combine advanced study and practice in both an academic area and in professional education, enhancing the teaching and leadership abilities of secondary school educators. Completion of this degree and other requirements leads to professional certification in New York State as a grades 7-12 teacher of the subjects outlined above.
