The doctoral program in behavioral neuroscience is research-intense and highly individualized. The program emphasizes three principle areas of scientific training: breadth of knowledge, analytical and methodological skills, and scientific communication skills.
Research experience is a core component of the student's graduate training. Students can tap into an extensive network of collaborative research projects among our research laboratories, and also between our own faculty/students and researchers outside Binghamton University, including several foreign scientific groups.
The department does not believe that all graduate students should fit into the same mold; training for each graduate student is therefore individualized so that no two students follow the same course schedule or engage in the same research activities. Coursework appropriate to the student's field of interest is emphasized in the first several years, and specialized seminars are available throughout the student's graduate career. Students choose the details of their areas of study in collaboration with their graduate mentors.
The behavioral neuroscience program is highly selective, accepting only a few students each year. While prior academic performance, test scores and letters of recommendation are considered by the faculty, another important factor for admission is a convergence of research interests between prospective students and the faculty.
