This special combined BS/MAT degree program accommodates the needs of a select group of Harpur College students who wish to efficiently combine an undergraduate science degree with a graduate level teacher certification program. (The combined degree programs include the entire current Harpur science BA or BS degree programs and the current MAT programs in biology, chemistry, earth science, and physics, all registered with New York State Education Department.) This combined degree program saves students one semester of time relative to the separate, sequentially taken BS and MAT degrees.
The combined program provides an opportunity for a limited number of outstanding liberal arts students to graduate in five years with a science BS and an MAT degree. To be eligible for the combined program, a student must have entered Binghamton University at the beginning of the freshman year and completed the ensuing five semesters at Binghamton University with a cumulative grade point average of 3.4 or better in your major discipline and overall. (Transfer students are not eligible for the combined program, but may apply to the MAT program.)
Students must apply for the program by December 15th of their junior year (i.e., in a student’s sixth semester); admissions decisions will be made during the following spring semester. Interested students are advised to meet with the MAT Science Education Coordinator in the Graduate School of Education and with the MAT advisor in the Geology department of Harpur College at the beginning of their sophomore year to ensure that all requirements are met in a timely manner. The application for the combined BS/MAT program is the same as it is for the MAT program. Applications are submitted to the Graduate School, and can be submitted online at http://www2.binghamton.edu/grad-school/prospective-students/how-to-apply/index.html . As with the MAT program, the two letters of recommendation should be from science professors familiar with the applicant’s work, although an additional letter may be from the supervisor of an extended position held by the applicant in the field of education. GRE scores should be sent to the graduate school by January 15.
