Harpur Featured Stories
For the past four years, I have had the privilege of serving as dean of Harpur College. I have enjoyed getting to know Harpur and working closely with the gifted, imaginative and passionate students, faculty, staff and alumni who make it such a special place. Their spirit, creativity and commitment to excellence have helped us overcome significant challenges and build on Harpur's tradition of excellence and experimentation to become even stronger.
In preparing the second issue of Harpur Perspective, we have tried to offer a glimpse into the rich diversity of Harpur College and some of the notable recent accomplishments of its students, faculty and alumni. As you read, I'm sure you will be impressed by the creativity and spirit of innovation that make Harpur one of the best colleges of liberal arts and sciences in the nation.
We have expanded the size of the magazine but can still include stories on only a small portion of the interesting and newsworthy developments in Harpur. To fully grasp Harpur's energy and excellence, you must experience it firsthand. So I invite you to return to campus to see for yourself — perhaps for Homecoming weekend, Oct. 12–14, 2012.
As I move to my new position as provost and vice president for academic affairs, I know that Harpur will continue to flourish. Dr. Wayne Jones — chair of our Department of Chemistry and an outstanding teacher and scholar — will provide outstanding leadership as interim dean. And Harpur's students, faculty, staff and alumni will continue to do amazing things. That is crucial to all of us at Binghamton University because a vibrant Harpur is essential if we are to make Binghamton the premier public university of the 21st century.

Welcome to the latest edition of Harpur Perspective. With 19 years on the faculty at Binghamton, I have had the good fortune to experience many aspects of the excellence that is the foundation of Harpur College and by extension Binghamton University. I am very excited to take on this new role as interim dean of Harpur and embrace the opportunity to help support and cultivate this excellence into the future.
We always enjoy sharing with you the many achievements across the college. Each issue of Harpur Perspective helps to highlight the many initiatives and excellence of our students, faculty and alumni. This issue is no different, and I hope you will enjoy reading about our leadership in the field of women’s studies, how our students have embraced the TEDx concept, how one alumnus has brought his political experience to bear on education reform, and much more. In addition to this annual publication, we plan to add quarterly electronic newsletters to our communications program this year to help you stay even more informed about campus activities and successes.
At Homecoming this fall, we will dedicate the newly renovated Harpur Quad outside the Library Tower. We will also officially unveil the new Harpur Wall that includes highlights from current activities and recognition of the past excellence which has helped to make Harpur what it is today. We hope that you will be able to join us.
Even if you are unable to be with us for our Homecoming celebrations, please let us know if you plan to be in the Binghamton area. We would love to welcome you back to Harpur. Feel free to contact me directly anytime at firstname.lastname@example.org with questions or suggestions.
