Resources for Students

Academic Advising

Harpur College has a dual advising system that rests on professional general advisors as well as faculty advisors who advise in their disciplines. The Harpur Academic Advising Office has professional advisors as well as peer advisors who provide assistance to all students. This office serves as the primary advising center for students who have not yet declared a major. Students who have declared a major also receive specialized advising through their home departments. Harpur offers specially trained advisors for pre-law and pre-health advising. The pre-law and pre-health advisors also work with students from the other schools and colleges.

Understanding and Tracking Academic Requirements

To help students track their progress, the online Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS) details a student’s completed and remaining requirements. The combination of dedicated advisers and DARS, coupled with the college's commitment to providing timely access to courses required for graduation, helps students stay on track toward graduation.  You can also investigate information on majors and minors at Harpur.

Academic requirements, standards, and policies are important, but the details can sometimes be confusing. For information on dropping or adding courses late in the semester, academic probation and suspension, check out important petition forms and policies.

Academic Assistance

Academic success doesn’t just happen by itself; it takes careful planning and effort. Even students who enter Harpur with strong high school records can benefit from special academic assistance at some point in their college careers. But there are ways you can plan for success. Two offices in particular can help you succeed academically.  The Writing Center assists students with general writing skills or particular writing assignments. The Center for Academic Excellence (outdated link)  provides tutoring for a wide range of courses.  Students who are not native English speakers can find help through the ESL Program. Academic advisors at the Harpur Academic Advising Office or in a specific department can also help you develop a strategy for academic success.

Academic Honesty

At the core of a university education is mutual integrity and trust. Students present their own work for fair evaluation by faculty. Under the Student Academic Honesty Code, academic dishonesty involves the misappropriation of academic or intellectual credit to oneself or to the discredit of others. The consequences of dishonesty at Binghamton are serious, and can include suspension or dismissal from the university. Harpur College procedures apply to academic honesty cases in Harpur classes.

If you have questions about class expectations, ask your instructor for clarification. The Writing Center can help you with the proper use and acknowledgment of sources.

Apply for the Harpur Undergraduate Advisory Committee!

The Harpur Undergraduate Advisory Committee provides input on Harpur College curriculum, policies and regulations, and academic culture. As an advisory committee, it does not make policy or deal with specific student cases. The committee meets for 90 minutes approximately every other week. We will pick a standing meeting time that works for the most people; members must be able to make this meeting time in order to serve. There may be modest work between meetings, such as reviewing materials to be discussed. Harpur seeks student members from a variety of majors, backgrounds and interests.

The Harpur Fellows Program

The newly created Harpur Fellows Program will award four fellowships of up to $4,000 each to undergraduate students in Harpur College. These competitive fellowships will support self-designed, independent projects that will allow the recipients to pursue a passionate interest that serves others and contributes to the well-being of the community. That interest may or may not be related to the student’s academic program. The site of the projects can be anywhere—in the Binghamton community, in another city or part of the U.S., or abroad. | More Information
