How did working people help build the U.S.? How has their composition, character, and culture changed over time? This course will consider how history may help us answer such questions. In answering the questions we will explore such issues as ethnicity, race, and gender as well as the history of labor and political movements. Novels and films will be used to understand better the culture of working people. Film/video attendance is mandatory.
Two lectures and one discussion weekly. All students will take an essay midterm and final examinations and write a 5-8 page paper due the final week of class based on the assigned novels and films. Final grade based on midterm (25%), short essay (25%), final examination (40%), and class participation (10%). Course satisfies both history and PPL major.
